Response to exactly why would that be.......they're IN the desert, ....

all the captions are period captions, the uploader even provides scans of some of them. Nothing else is mentioned as a "desert" whatever. So, in context, I take it to mean they were specifically prepped for desert use. The photos are from the collection of Lt Cdr Pat Chilton, who was a squadron C/O (don't know if he was this squadron's c/o at this particular time), so I take it he knew what he was talking about. I know reading things in context is not exactly the way things are usually done on the ol' internets, but it's the way I tend to do things.
