Seeking Information On B-17C 'KR 17" (The Academy B-17C Kit)

I am a bit out of my area with an early Fortress, but the prospect of covering such an expanse of plastic in foil is proving irresistible. I do like to know something about a plane I model, and this is proving difficult, as I cannot riddle the significance of the 'KR 17' on the tail. I have not seen a photograph of this plane, I have seen a profile identifying it as a machine of the 50th Reconnaissance Squadron of the 11th Bomb Group at Hickam Field.

I understand that K as the eleventh letter of the alphabet could stand for 11th Bomb Group, but would expect the K to come second, after a B.

I have also seen indication that where K came first, it indicated an 'Air Base Squadron', but this would be followed by a number, not another letter.

So I am stumped, Gentlemen. Perhaps it is some local variation of the system employed only by the Hawaii command?
