As it happens, I'm in Oklahoma City doing some research in the FAA's Aircraft Registry, so I took the opportunity this morning to look at the file on N68RW. The FAA does indeed record the "serial number" as 1217761, based on a mistake on the original Bill of Sale. When the airplane was sold by the Marine Corps Combat Development Command on 8 Feb 1996, the serial number was recorded as 1217761, and the error has persisted throughout the airplane's subsequent history and entire paper trail.

However, when the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame reported its name change from the Lone Star Flight Museum in June of 1998, it correctly reported the number as 121776, but called it the serial number, not the BuNo.

So you can blame the Marines for the original error, but the distinction between the military serial number and the manufacturer's serial number has been lost. This is why many historians (including myself) prefer the term "constructor's number" (c/n) instead of "manufacturer's serial number."

I'm not really a pompous ***; I just play one on HyperScale!
