...probably Cosmoline, which was widely used during WWII., here's a good pic of some on a rifle that shows the golden color it gives shiny steel.  Probably be pretty easy to replicate with Tamiya Clear colors over a metallic base.

And a Cosmoline covered engine valve.  I think this is actually a radial engine valve.  My buddy who sells A/C parts has an actual WWII-vintage R-2800 valve still covered in Cosmoline and paper sitting on his desk.  It's very similar to this one.  [linked image]
