Response to can one still say "hit or miss" about them?

... to pay what you want for kits. Of the older kits that are still being sold, you need to bear in mind that the decals aren't 60s decals. I recently bought a P-39 (I know it's not the greatest P-39 out there) and for $6 at the LMS, I got a nice decal sheet. I don't know how much the Academy P-39 is, but it's going to be more than $6 at the LMS - the Academy P-39 is $7 at Squadron - so "2012 prices" still vary according to "what you get" - and even with the Academy, you're not getting an accurate radio rack or underside details (the radiator area looks like a copy of Heller's treatment of this area, which differs markedly from Monogram's and Eduard's, and I didn't think there were differences in underwing contours between P-39Qs!).

OTOH, Airfix's Hurricane IIs aren't to my liking, being a throwback to the shape of their earlier Hurricane I/IIB/D/IV in some respects.

Do you need to take a gamble these days, though? Unless you're pre-ordering, there is enough data on the web to make an informed decision before you part with your cash.
