Response to Airfix Modelworld Mag & Advice on Aussie F-18 Hornet, Please!

The Australian classic hornets have, like European F-16s, gone through a number of upgrades which have affected external appearance (even more that the F-16s. As David notes, for other than delivery aircraft (which will still need tail stiffeners added if that concerns you) it may be easier to work backwards from a C.

In 1/72 The Academy Australian/Canadian/Spanish A-Hornet boxing purports to provide for an up to date Aussie Hornet. At cursory glance I think it looks OK, including key features like swept antennae, bird-slicers and (one of the earliest mods) aerodynamic devices on the LEXs); when I get around to building mine, I will be looking very carefully at the fin antenna fit.

For Aussie Hornet Lore you might ask at the Aussie Modeller Forum where people who know and who even work on them are sometimes to be found.

Here's comments on building one in 1/48 from the forum archive:

I'm not up on Supers but Hasegawa does one boxed as an RAAF aircraft. I am only aware of one aftermarket set (which I have) but which I think is now no longer available. I think we bought the supers pretty much out of the box except for, in some, some additional wiring to enable upgrade to Gs later. We didn't even get them re-wired for ASRAAM (which our As carry) but brought the AIM-9X into the inventory.

Here's an article from this site about relatively current A Hornets

Hopefully to engender enthusiasm Here's my Hasegawa B model (from the TF-18A boxing) in shortly-after-but-not-as-at-delivery markings from Hawkeye models (the difference is that at delivery the small tiger-head marking in the corner of the fin flash was absent happy.gif ). Note the guesstimated find reinforcements.
