Jay was a Master modeler mentor in "Jim Sage's IPMS Chapter" (IPMS/NCT...Dallas). He was also a prototype modeler for both LTV (Vought) and Bell Helicopter. His instructions on carving masters for presentation models helped many many of us. Yet his humor was infectious...!

One 'axiom' of his: "1950s kit instructions for interiors said 'paint the interior GREEN, thus the pilot was an interior part, paint it green!" LOL

Jay had been afflicted with "Transverse Mylietis" at age nine (sort of severing of the spine) and in a wheelchair most of his life. Yet, he was probably the most traveled paraplegic I knew.

Jay produced a gathering of USN and USAAF Camouflage orders along with the first distribution of the FS595 color chips in a modeling guide. He also wrote the two F4U CORSAIR and the P-39 PROFILE PUBLICATONS.

Astronaut Allan Bean became the SECOND Honorary "Confederate Air Force" Colonel...but Jay Dial was the FIRST...Jay helped the CAF to transition from their red/white/blue scheme to combat markings.

As one of those who drove Jay to many events and handling his wheelchair, he came to refer us as "Ground Support Equipment Specialists".

We lost Jay in 1993 and we still talk of his adventures such as flying in an AT-6 or Beechcraft Staggerwing.
