I am looking for the best way to make shallow salt water like it is found in the S.Pacific. I will need it clear enough to see the sand because I am planning to make it look like its about 4-5ft deep. Thank you !!!!

Powdered water.............

July 3 2009, 2:45 PM

Although I have no idea what to mix with it.................

(bad joke)

Anyway, there is a clear-resin product that I've seen in the model railroading section of most hobby shops (next to the landscaping stuff.) Perhaps you should give that a try.

You mix it 1 to 1 with water, I thought everyone knew that.

Art supplies...

July 3 2009, 3:38 PM

You might also try acrylic matt medium and/or acrylic gloss medium. Be sure you don't use water-soluable paints on your seabed, then pour thin layers of the medium to work up the desired effect. Don't forget to add some flecks of silver in with the seabed!

Cheers,

Dana

Try Vallejo "Still Water"

July 3 2009, 3:38 PM

it's a pourable liquid that sets to a rubber-like form. Pour about 1-2mm at a time and let it set then add more until you have your depth.
This can be topped with a product called "water effects" also by Vallejo which can used to make waves and the like. comes either completely crystal clear or with a blue tint.

I got these effects using these two products.

I use Acrylic gel medieum to model water.

July 3 2009, 3:42 PM

It is non toxic and won't harm the finish on your model. For a shaoolw depth like you mention you might try painting it onto some 1/16 plexiglas and then adjust that above your sand base to get the effect you want. Have not tried it for real shallow water so that was just a suggestion.

It is available at Michaels and most other art supply stores. It also comes in gloss or flat.

HTH, Mike

Acrylic gel medium

July 3 2009, 4:10 PM

this stuff looks like mayonaise in the jar. It can be brushed on in thin layers and sculpted into waves a little at a time because it will settle as it drys. Also it becomes clear as it drys. When it is dry apply another layer. You can also add white caps by dry brushing white onto the wave tops. with a bit of practice on some clear food wrap scraps you can sculpt splashes . I have even made explosions using the gel but along with melted white ABS plastic but that requires some power tools.
