I've noticed quite a few models that have the Rolls Royce lettering the the rocker box covers painted in red. Was this a war time practice or a post war embellishment? I'm getting close to needing to know, LOL!
Postwar embellishment. Wartime Merlins were very drab

and painted an overall semi-flat black. I'm not even sure that all wartime Merlin marks had the familiar "ROLLS ROYCE" legends cast into the rocker covers. Some appear to have the cast-in rectangular "placard", but without the Rolls-Royce text. Certainly they were absent from the Packard built examples. Postwar "transport" Merlins had an "RR" logo cast into the rocker covers.
The LF IX in the museum in Prague, TE565, has had some dubious exterior repaints, but is almost totally original, complete and untouched internally. Its powerplant, and the Mk66 Merlin displayed alongside, lack the Rolls-Royce text but feature the blank placard. Of course, this is only one example.
Embellishing the text in red, or polishing up engine components, appears to have been done only on special engines prepared for photography or public display. It's pretty common on modern "warbirds" however.
