Nice picture. Looks like freshly painted out rudder stripes. nt

I was guessing either that, or a replacement. It's out west no doubt, but not enough visible to ID it. Also, I have not seen that many color photos of the P2Y.
Love that boarding ramp,

Darker rudder
June 26 2012, 1:30 AM
Possibly not darker colour, look how rudder is turned, shadow is on rear fuselage, I would suggest because of the angle of the rudder and the sun, this side of rudder is in shadow
Just looked at the pics I've saved to my drive. For some reason, almost every pic shows the rudder at the same angle. Only one has it to the other direction and only a couple have it even.
Yep, rudder turned to the right blocking sun from behind/left

Those turned rudders can be confusing,

Pensacola Bay with Ft. Pickens Nat. Seashore off in the background, Ft. Pickens itself is just under the wing of the P2Y. The seaplane ramps and hangars are still there, one is the gym, another storage. To their right, just down the beach is the lighthouse. "Lighthouse runs" along that beach were a daily event at Aircrew school...fun!

According to Dana Bell it is NAS Corpus Christi, TX. nt

I have the RM kit and all three CE sets, as well as a Vector R-985. Only need a vac canopy and I'm square. I would also like to get a photo of Ginter's TBD monograph.
There is also a nice photo in the same set where I got the above of a ramp full of land based -3s with I believe the two tone finish and rudder stripes. That would make for a nice change of pace for a build. That goes as well for Alfredo Garcia's build of a land based Kingfisher in Mexican markings.

Not saying he don't know his stuff but...that's not Corpus. You're not going to see sand that white along the Texas Gulf and that's FT. Pickens out there in the background.

My guess is that Dana obtained the original image in the repository in DC, NASM or other gov't doc depository.
I'll take Dana's word, until he say he was wrong.

My mistake. It took me half an hour to go through all the Kingfisher photos to run this one down, but I was mistaken in my ID in the book - I didn't know it until now, or I would have added this to the correction article I did here on HyperScale. Thanks for trusting me, but sadly I screwed up on this one.
But i now know that Pensacola has better sand then Corpus Christi.
I've seen worse in well researched manuscripts.

You ought to take a trip down and visit the Naval Air Museum there...just up the road from that spot. Beautiful beaches...just watch out for the white tips!

Hi Andrew...

It appears you're right about Pensacola - sorry for the mixup in the book. The color shot comes from Vought without caption, but I used a series of similar scenes in 80-G photos from Corpus to help ID the location. Turns out another 80-G photo from Pensacola is almost identical to this color image.
Thanks for clarification. Pensacola it is then. nt

I only knew it from running up and down that beach a whole lot...and volunteering over at the NMNA. The far end of that spit of sand out there is a white tip shark haven! Good feeding ground as the ocean washes into the sound from the gulf.
Is that main float (and struts) silver? Maybe I'm trying to read too much into the picture. To my eyes, the color doesn't match up to the Intermediate Blue or to the White under-fuselage color.
That's a training command bird down in P-cola (c'mon Don...I know you remember that beach, lighthouse runs and "sand cookies" ?). Probably taken not long after going from "yellow wing" to blue over gray. I'm sure they didn't bother with the floats, left them aluminum, along with the old style prop tip colors.
There are lots of pics out there from when they were yellow wing and aluminum fuselage and tail section. National markings on the wings but just aircraft "modex" numbers on the cowl and fuselage.

The order to go use yellow tip did not come until August 28, '42
June 26 2012, 10:56 AM
The three colors were still acceptable. The three color could be dropped only if replaced by full yellow. It was not a requirement to repaint the three color tips.

Perhaps nothing to do with being a training aircraft.
June 26 2012, 11:10 AM
Note that the under-wing national marking does not have a red center, so the picture was taken sometime after May 6, 1942, when the red was ordered deleted. So it is possible that it is after May and before August. Also, as noted, the yellow tip did not mean the earlier three color had to be removed, it only simplified the marking process.

Don't belive they're in the "three-color". Too early.
June 26 2012, 12:10 PM
That is pre-May '42. The "three-color" did not come in until 1943.
Blue-Gray over Lt. gray.

But if you look at the second aircraft, just below the rudder and to the right of the horizontal stabilizer, it looks like there is a tonal variation in the blue, and the same goes with the aircraft behind it. As I said perhaps the image itself, but worth a second glance.

Vought drawings and practices often called for the entire prop to be painted flat Insignia Blue, with yellow and red tips. (The Navy originally called out red/yellow/blue tips with the blue extended on the aft face to reduce glare. This was updated when camouflage was introduced to paint the forward face black inside of the three-color tips.)
In this photo the prop is clearly black on both sides, with the three-color tips.
That picture is in Dana Bell's monograph - NAS Pensacola (Dana Bell correction)
