Did the TBD Devastators used at the Coral Sea battle have twin .30 cal. guns in the rear gunner's position? TIA

Single .30s at the Battle of the Coral Sea....

July 8 2012, 7:21 PM

The Yorktown & Lexington TBDs retained their standard armament.

You mean SBDs not TBDs

July 8 2012, 7:24 PM

Dauntless and not Avenger. The Avenger had a ball turret with one MG all his life.
If I remember correctly it was after the Coral Sea Battle that SBDs began to have twin MGs installed so that at Midway they were common.

Pretty sure he means TBD as in Devastator, not TBM or TBF as in Avenger

Um, I think he really means what he originally said - TBD's....

July 8 2012, 7:36 PM

...since Avengers - TBF's - did not enter service in squadron strength (note I said squadron strength - a detachment of VT-8 had a few Avengers that flew off Midway Island) until after Midway, in early June of '42. At least one squadron of SBD Dauntlesses, Scouting 2 from USS Lexington, had the single .30 cal mount at Coral Sea.

Re: You mean SBDs not TBDs

I suspect he meant just what he typed- TBD Devastator. The TBF Avenger did not enter fleet service until just before Midway; 6 Avengers of VT-8 participated in that battle, flying from Midway Island.

Devastators and Dauntlesses both carried a single .30 cal. machine gun as rear armament at Coral Sea.

Well, STDs would be a BFD but you'd think he'd keep that on the DL PDQ. nt

Quite. If one is a QC or an OBE with VD, then that's definitely

something you'd want to keep on the QT. Not even an RSVP.

I meant the TBD.....

July 8 2012, 8:39 PM

....as in Torpedo Bomber, Douglas (aka "Devastator"). Not to be confused with Scout Bomber, Douglas (Dauntless); or Torpedo Bomber, Grumman (Avenger).

VT-8 installed twin 30 cal mounts after Coral Sea

July 8 2012, 10:15 PM

I believe VT-8 was the only unit to do this and it was after Coral Sea.

Best wishes,
Grant

Per VT-6's Midway After Action Report..

July 9 2012, 9:05 AM

written by the senior surviving officer (Lt(jg), VT-6 at least had the twins at Midway. Not sure about VT-5.

Correct, it was immediately before Midway

July 9 2012, 12:19 PM

Walter Lord mentions that Waldron spent time getting the twin mounts for his squadron once the Hornet and Enterprise arrived back at Pearl from the South Pacific. They had been dispatched there after returning from the Doolittle mission, but arrived to late to take part in Coral Sea.

As Lord told the story, Waldron was so elated after getting whatever ordnance officer to issue the mounts that he left his flight gloves behind at that office.
