F6F-3 Hellcat "Little Joe" from VF-51....

Had the name and some dice on the cowl. It was in US Navy tri-color scheme and was stationed aboard USS San Jacinto. I'm sure there are many others.

Re: WW II, U.S Fighters that had the name "Joe" as part of their nose art. Any suggestion

Although this plane isn't considered a fighter, the tailgunner from fall of 1944 to March of 1945 was a fighter. The only fight he ever lost came in December, 2011, and I consider it a draw rather than a loss. My middle name is Joe.

Sorry if this doesn't fit the subject.

P-47D's 509th FS/405th FG Little Joe & Honeybucket joe

July 16 2012, 12:29 PM

Both nmf bubbletops- Little Joe had Pair of dice on the left side cowl & red everywhere..red cowl ring, alt cowl flaps, gun covers ( probably) wingtips, canopy framing, wheel covers ... dorsal fillet & tail theatre bands. . Pilot Joe ONeil from Roselle Illinois.

Honeybucket Joe- Pilot Billy Doyle, KIA. Possibly the most bizarre nose art on a P-47D. Big grinning face takes up the entire cowling. The name came from a popular song of the day (Honeysuckle Rose) that they " bastardized" in the officers club one evening. Colors alternated between a red cowl ring and black ring.. Red canopy framing, theatre bands.. There were two H. Joe's, both lost in action.
You can see models of both here:
