Greetings! Does anyone know where one could find a good image (photo or drawing) of any of the F4F Wildcats flown by James Flately? The markings for his Hellcat are easy to find, but I've come up dry on his Wildcat.
He's from Green Bay, WI and I'd like to build at least a couple of his a/c. I recall there was a display of models of his a/c at the airport 35+ years ago, but they're long gone.
P.S. It was his son that landed the C-130 on the USS Forrestal
When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteorite hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteor.
Is going to be your best bet as a reference, perhaps Reaper Leader by Ewing. Flatly was with VF-2 flying F2A-3s from Lex when the war started and then went to VF-42 equipped with F4F-3s aboard the Yorktown during the Coral Sea. After that he was with VF-10 flying F4F-4s aboard Enterprise during the Guadalcanal campaign beginning in October 42. Lundstrom's has tons of detail on Bureau Numbers and side codes in the text and then the appendixes have line drawings that are as accurate as anything out there.
