Some parts of undersurface may have been NMF...

April 20 2017, 5:26 PM

Those ID stripes on undersides of horizontal surfaces remained in Black, and the sheen there looks not unlike natural metal. Schillings a/c e.g., had NMF undersurface. Per his crew chief the Gray on Gabby's last 'Bolt looked a bit purplish - such as in that colour photo of port ammo bays being loaded - because topsides were first sprayed Green overall, then followed with the Gray. He said Gabreski wanted his a/c painted like the German a/c they'd been seeing.

Is the green first then gray paint verified?

April 20 2017, 5:45 PM

I saw something about it on the internet but the source was a bit dubious. I would love to list this as verified info.

Thanks!
Darrell B

Given the appearance of application to the aircraft, I'd say green then gray

Masked...

April 20 2017, 7:51 PM

Modeldad, looks like they masked the rear edge of the red part of the cowl to keep off the gray overspray. Also, what about the effects on the right wheel cover? Maybe that has been mentioned and I missed it. All the best, Don.

Don't think there was a purposeful pattern

Just random application of gray, and if you can see it clearly from that picture, then WOW!
