Aaaahhh, Kodachrome...

For historians it was a marvelous product. I cried when they dropped it from Kodak's line.

Didn't we all get a lecture awhile back about parked aircraft with bomb loads hanging on 'em.

Yes, but: clearly, the pilots and ground crew in the 371st never read HS...

June 18 2017, 8:07 PM

otherwise they'd have known what they were doing wrong...

You did notice though that the bombs aren't armed. Maybe that's the difference.nm

Not likely

June 19 2017, 11:47 PM

Tail fuzes frequently had anti-removal features that would fire them if unscrewed. Thus, they weren't put in until needed.

yes, but "alert" aircraft got left out of that convo

June 18 2017, 10:21 PM

And "armed and ready" alert aircraft were certainly a way of life.

I believe you're mistaken. Not parked, but rather being serviced with open everything.

loaded and armed. And parked. But, not being serviced with panels lying all about.

Both of these P-47Ds have had two of the eight .50s removed.....

June 18 2017, 7:11 PM

as was described in a couple of books long ago. It was done to increase the roll rate and maneuverability.

On the second one, perhaps not

June 19 2017, 9:06 AM

The outermost gun blast tube was quite short, barely extending beyond the leading edge. Also, no tape present, which was done when a gun was removed.

Not terribly uncommon to remove a gun, made for faster climb by making the aircraft a bit lighter. And 6 .50 cals was perhaps enough. Removing a gun in each wing was done with P-40s of 325th FG in North Africa to gain climb rate.

Where do you get England from?

June 19 2017, 10:44 AM

Given the original post (pilot in France). The lack of upper surface invasion stripes puts the date after the invasion, so an airfield on the continent makes sense.
