Yeah, I can see it...weird?

September 12 2017, 2:44 PM

I guess the colors are a bit faded...either because of the sun or washed out photo.

Thanks. I took the photo way back when I noticed how strange..

September 12 2017, 2:54 PM

the tan color looked on this bird. I thought for a moment that it was an ex-Luft bird, but apparently some batches of SEA tan faded into a pea soup color.

umm, I get in trouble for saying this

September 12 2017, 3:01 PM

But, 34201 was one of the alternate colors called out in the TO back during Vietnam.

Or else we have to believe that the 30219 faded the same in Vietnam photos, CONUS photos, and photos taken in England and Europe.

I'm fine with the idea of fading paint,,,,,but, not so much the fading to the same shade in four areas of the world, over the lifetime of F-4C, F-4D and F-4E.

The werid pea green color was a bad batch of paint. They stayed that way till repainted.

This photo doesn't have the yellow cast that the first one does.

September 12 2017, 3:51 PM

The A-7 looks proper. I'm prepared to accept either that it was an "off" paint job or that the film is off. Back when film was in, I had variations in the same roll that were explained mainly to exposure to heat while in the camera. Upshot? Each explanation or all explanations could be correct.
Tank: So what do you need? Besides a miracle.
Neo: Guns. Lots of guns.

I remember it being off color and that was the reason I photographed it.

brings to mind the other piece of data

September 12 2017, 4:03 PM

A unit deployed somewhere with their aircraft.

2 of them faded and the rest of the squadron didn't??

nope, don't buy that theory, either.

Colors are dead on. I was at Eglin with some F-4s from Seymour Johnson, and I noticed how faded the tan was on their aircraft. I chalked it up to sun, humidity and the goo they used on their wash rack. Stuff nearly stripped the paint off the hood of our Deuce and a half!

I wonder....

September 12 2017, 4:05 PM

if this is a color adaption to an aircraft originally intended for service in a desert climate?? May be I'm being too logical but it sure looks like R.A.F. Desert camo from back in the "Big One"!

Strange camo

September 12 2017, 4:20 PM

I remember seeing other F-4s with a greenish tint to the tan. Here is another F-4 with non-standard scheme or a very faded one:

Hi David...

September 12 2017, 4:59 PM

Long time no see!

Dave Menard used to talk about that greenish tan all the time - there were problems with several batches of "normal" tan that quickly faded to that green. I remember PR ANG A-7s had the problem, and I managed to photograph one of the last RF-101s with the greenish cast. It was there in real life, but it was never intentional.

Cheers,

Dana
