Hurricane Damage ... 74 years ago

... An RCAF Hurricane of 133 (F) Squadron which was a home defense unit based at Patricia Bay B.C. 7-1-1943. They were to defend the west coast from Japanese attack. And by no way making light of the horrible events of recent. Nothing but best wishes and support to those poor souls affected.

Noted on 8 June 1942 as "has to be modified before being placed in service". Delivered to stored reserve with No. 4 Training Command. Issued to No. 133 (F) Squadron at Lethbridge, Alberta on 3 July 1942. Still with this unit when it transferred to Western Air Command and moved to RCAF Station Boundary Bay, BC on 26 October 1942.

Formed at Lethbridge, Alberta, on 3 June 1942, with Hurricanes and Harvards, by the end of the month, No.133 had 24 Hurricanes on strength. It moved to Boundary Bay, B.C. on 5 October 1942, to Tofino on Vancouver Island on 1 July 1943 and then to Sea Island on 10 March 1944.

Another reference indicates that 133 Sq was disbanded at Patricia Bay in 1945.

Between early 1942 and April 1944 there were three operational fighter squadrons rotated through Boundary. On the fourth of February 1943, Pilot Officer, Grover Stewart Sargent from No. 133 Fighter Squadron took off from the Boundary Bay aerodrome in Hurricane #5398. P/O Sargent was on a 'Night Flying Test' of his Canadian built Hurricane that night when he ran into trouble and crashed near Pender Island. Hurricane 5398 had been delivered to 133 Fighter Squadron while the Unit was still at Lethbridge Alberta on July 16th 1942. The a/c nose on either side had the Inscription, “March Of Dimes,” apparently a gift of the foundation for the war effort. Sargent had also joined 133 (f) Squadron a month earlier and both Sargent and this aircraft made the trip to Boundary Bay when the Squadron was transferred to the West Coast. P/O Sargent was highly thought of within the Squadron - so much so that he was given a posthumous promotion to Flying Officer. Flying Officer Sargent's body was returned to his home town where he lies at the Lake View Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Point Claire, Quebec. He was 21. Lest We Forget

From the Unit Diary of No. 133 Fighter Squadron, Boundary Bay, 15th April 1943:
“R137479 Sergeant Pilot E. E. Grissom in Hurricane A/C No. 5387 at 11:55 hours broke away from formation leader at about five thousand feet without warning and dove into ground half a mile East of station buildings instantly killing pilot and totally destroying aircraft. Cause of accident unknown.”

Perhaps he mean't 135 instead of 133 therefore the original photos I posted are correctly titled.

"Although this image below was taken in Lethbridge Alberta in late 1942-early 43, it was one of the No. 133 Fighter Squadron Hawker Hurricanes that made an historic trip to Boundary Bay Feb.1943. Boundary Bay had been re-designated a Home War Defense Station and No. 133 was tasked with protecting the Air space of the Greater Vancouver Area from possible attack from Japanese Forces. The Squadron made the trip non stop from Lethbridge and by the time they reached Boundary Bay they were "sucking fumes", recalled Pilot Officer McGowan. "We had no fuel left, not even enough to circle the aerodrome and so we landed in Squadron Formation of three at a time, all twelve aircraft. As far as I know it was never done before or since, (during WW2), as it was very dangerous, if someone screwed up it would be catastrophic."

Documents say otherwise. 133 was not based at Patricia Bay at the time. 135 Sq went there from Boundary.

Yes, they are correctly labeled for 133 Sq at Boundary bay.

I grew up about 5 miles from ZBB (Boundary Bay Airport). It was a very active training base with a bomb range nearby and also it is not far from Vancouver international airport, which was Sea Island at the time and home to both factories and also aircraft.

More recently, there has been a very active group of pilots that hang out there every sunday morning. It includes cold war vets, bush pilots and many pioneers of the early trans pacific air routes. Up until recently even a few WWII vets would go. Fascinating group and I have many friends among them.

RCAF Dartmouth Apr 1942 - Aug 1942 / Jul 1943 - Sept.1943

No. 127 Squadron formed as a fighter unit at Dartmouth NS on 1 July 1942 and was equipped with Hurricane aircraft. The squadron flew from Dartmouth, Gander NF and Pennfield Ridge NB on East Coast air defence. In late 1943 No.127 Squadron was selected as one of six home fighter units for duty overseas; it was renumbered No. 443 (Fighter) Squadron at Digby, Lincolnshire, England on 8 February 1944. Flight Lieutenant "Wally" McLeod, No. 127 Squadron's last Commanding Officer and No. 443 Squadron's first Commanding Officer, became the RCAF's second highest scoring pilot during the Second World War with 21 enemy aircraft destroyed before he was killed over Holland on 27 September 1944.

RCAF 5386 is a CCF Hurricane XII fka Hurricane IIB(Can). It has the long fuselage, Packard Merlin 29, and 12 gun wing. What is interesting is that many CCF Hurricane XIIs had Mk. I style exhausts and tailwheels. The oil cooler ring didn't appear on RCAF Hurricanes until spinners were fitted.

To build a Hurricane XII in 1/48, you would want to start with a Hurricane IIB and the Ultracast set. Remove the oil cooler ring, use early exhausts, and fit the appropriate tail-wheel for your chosen aircraft.

I did a three part article for IPMS Canada on the RCAF Hurricanes correcting all the misinformation that has been published on the type. I have considered expanding it to book form, but sadly I'm not sure there is a market for such a publication.
