Super Nerdy Question on 4th FG P-51Ds....

Did any of them ever use the 75 gallon tear drop tanks? I am do a build in those markings and would prefer to use the smaller tanks, but in every photo I have they all have 108 gallon paper tanks. I have seen photos of P-51Bs with the smaller tanks. I see three possibilities. Either 1. I just don't have enough photos to have caught a D with those tanks, 2. All the smaller tanks had been used up by then, or 3. They were only doing long range escort missions by then.

Hoping it is number 1 but thanks to any who can confirm either way.

One Thing I've Learned

January 13 2018, 1:23 PM

...is that you should almost never say "never." Can anyone prove that no 4FG P-41D EVER used the 75 gal tanks? No. So just because you can't find a pic of such (and I can't say I've ever seen one either), doesn't mean it never happened.

Plus which, it's YOUR model. If you want the 75 gallon tanks on it, put them on. But I'd advise mounting them with something only semipermanent such as Elmer's or Tacky Glue, so if the day ever comes that you decide you want the model to look more right, you can remove them and install the 108s.

(Yes, I realize I'm going to take flak for that last paragraph. Guess what? I'm old and I don't care. Or maybe I've been hanging out too much in Model Car World, where there is more creativity and latitude allowed.)

Remember, to a real modeler, kit instructions are just somebody else's opinion.

Ahh, a minor adjustment-the photo is 4th Fighter Squadron 1st Air Commando

January 13 2018, 7:10 PM

My photo collection is not all encompassing but the only 4th FG planes I found that consistently carried 75 gal tanks were early P-51B's (like OD over NG) so from Jan to June 1944.
Tank: So what do you need? Besides a miracle.
Neo: Guns. Lots of guns.

Highly plausible the 4th used the 75 gallon tanks..

January 13 2018, 5:41 PM

at some point. Supply & availability in the times what was used was what was available. Pictures of other groups of D models with both types and sizes to bear that out. It is not going to be historically inaccurate.

I figure if I make a decent effort and can’t prove myself wrong...

January 13 2018, 7:10 PM

I don’t worry too much about it... I built Bader and McKnight’s hurricanes a while back and did them with no sky band and black spinners but with the black port underside wings... turns out my directions were questionable, it’s likely the black port wing came the same time as the change to sky spinner and the fuselage band was added but... the directive for the port wing came a month before the sky spinner and band and there’s talk that there was sky paint shortages at the time... I can’t prove myself wrong, therefor I’m leaving it as is happy.gif

Paris 1945 Reggie's Reply

January 13 2018, 7:27 PM

Howdy,

What was once Fred Glover's plane was painted in spurious "Reggie's Reply" markings for the end of war display under the Eiffel Tower. It also had teardrop tanks.

seems the tear drop tank supply....

January 13 2018, 7:54 PM

It appears the tear drop tank inventory bled over into the arrival of the "D" model and the 110 gal tanks arrived in time for the "B/C" models to use them as well.

I don't see you going wrong either way.

Totally winging it here but the "paper" tanks were sourced in Britain whereas the metal...

January 14 2018, 12:08 PM

tanks had to be brought in on ship. Could it simply be that having an acceptable substitute allowed those tanks to be sent elsewhere (MTO, PTO, CBI)? You do see far less of the metal tanks in the ETO and never see the "paper" tanks anywhere BUT Northern Europe.
Tank: So what do you need? Besides a miracle.
Neo: Guns. Lots of guns.
