referring to Kiyokazu Isomi's model of Gunther Specht's 109G5/AS brings up a question. Herr Specht was one of the people I remember from Heinz Knoke's book. I know he was listed as missing in action after the big German air raid on allied airfields on New Year's Day, 1945.
Has anyone ever found out exactly what happened to Gunther Specht??

Specht had a long war

February 13 2018, 12:04 AM

Specht had lost an eye as a Bf 110 pilot, in combat 23.May 1940. He switched to single-seaters upon recovery, and was Knoke's Gruppenkommandeur in the II/JG 11, flying Bf 109Gs in the home defense.

As Geschwaderkommodore of the JG 11, he went missing 1.Jan. 1945 in the Maastricht area, probably due to Flak, in FW 190A-9 WNr.205033, and remains missing. The best coverage of the Bodenplatte operation remains Manrho & Pütz's book.

Specht

February 13 2018, 12:35 AM

Hi Guys,
Mel Paisley and/or his wingman claim to have shot Specht down. After the battle they knew where he went down and found the A-9.Paper work and personal items identified the pilot as Specht. Mel Paisley stayed with us here in Montana for a few days working his book and I asked what happened to the Specht material and he said they turned over to the International Red Cross.
Cheers, Jerry

Interesting model for sure, and I wonder if anyone can comment on accuracy or otherwise of the paint scheme. This aircraft was illustrated in the Mushroom Bf 109 late versions book, but it had very definite white bands covering a good part of the upper wings, and a more factory type paint scheme than the model shows. MMP did not comment on the white bands in the aircraft description, and I have never seen a photo of the machine.

Jerry, Manrho & Pütz address that claim on pp148/149

They believe it was Oblt. August Engel's pistol and wallet. They include a local eyewitness's details as well. Specht, and his wingman, Uffz. Sophus Schmidt, remain unaccounted for.

Claim

Mel Paisley said he had no idea who Specht was until they read the papers they found and investigated to find out who he was. Lt. Johnson was the one who actually retrieved the papers and pistol that proved to Specht's. Mel believed Specht's 190 is the one he shot down that had been on Johnson' tail. The story is on page 201 of Mel's book ACE. Apparently Johnson kept the pistol but the papers were turned over to the Red Cross they could be returned to the family.
Cheers, Jerry
