I am doing a 1/48 Eduard F6F-5 Hellcat in the markings of VF-46. I have the Superscale sheet #481239.

What I need is help with the markings. I noticed the ones on the Superscale sheet do not have the number "2" for the fuselage or the nose. Is this correct? The only picture I found on the net was this one...

I can't tell if there are any "fuselage" numbers or not. Wasn't it standard practice to have the "number" on the fuselage/nose as well as the tail?

Plus, is the checkerboard markings on the aileron on the bottom as well?

Can anyone help with researching the markings for this plane? More photos would be extremely helpful.:worship:

VF-47 markings

February 14 2018, 7:53 AM

Hi, Scott -

It was indeed standard practice for navy squadrons at the time to use a large fuselage plane number, but apparently VF-47 didn't follow standard practice here. They used only small plane numbers on the vertical fin and front end of the cowling. The checkerboard carrier identification marking on the right upper wing aileron was also carried on the bottom left wing as well.

If you want to dress up your Hellcat with the large fuselage numbers, just switch squadrons - VF-27 ( which previously were marked with the famous 'Cat-mouth' squadron insignia when deployed aboard USS Princeton), was deployed aboard USS Independence in July 1945 around the same time as VF-41, and this squadron carried the same checkerboard carrier insignia on wings and tail, along with large fuselage plane numbers and a large plane number on the upper right wing.
