I'm not talking about amounts won, but just bets that you look back on fondly
In the golf Scott Hoch has a special place in my diary, having backed him to win tournaments at both 40/1 and 80/1 in the last few years.
Also one would have to be dating back to my horse racing days, when I took a horse called Kribensis to win the Triumph Hurdle.
Before it was ever seen in public, I took 25/1 about the beast then after scraping home in a Doncaster Novice Hurdle, I topped up at 20/1.
Looking back the bet was sheer madness, but the truth was that the horse hacked up at Cheltenham and went onto to follow up in the Champion Hurdle to following year when I was on again.
On the football front, it would have to be Wimbledon winning the FA Cup way back in 1988 at the juicy odds of 40/1 ..... oh happy days
I think as I have grown older and more experienced, the fearless choices made above would no longer be part of any bets that I strike today, apart from the the golf ones.
Euro 96 as a tournament holds great memories for me. I had almost the lot of my final installment of my grant check on Germany to win the tourney at 4/1. Not only that but I won 3 or 4 coupns throughout the tournament. One great memory was having a daft £20 on Casaraghe to score the first goal Vs Russia at 8/1!!that kept me in beer for the rest of the tournament!
I backed Ronaldo at 20/1 to be top Goal Scorer in the world Cup and i also Backed Brazil at 10/1 to win the World cup when it was looking iffy that they might not make it thru qualification!
I also backed that local horse that won the Gold cup at 40/1 it came from Dorset (cant remember the name).
I also got a Lucky 31 in many years ago with a 16/1
13/2 11/2 3/1 and 6/4 on the horses, very lucky indeed but was for very small stakes!
Also last year or the one before i use to do the Scoop 6 and always use to get very close this one week i couldnt make my mind up on the 2nd race between a 14/1 shot and a 3/1 fav and as i had allready done 2 horses in 3 races allready i didnt want to spend much more so i chose the 3/1 fav.
Gutting as the 14/1 came 1st and my 3/1 fav lost by a short head and was almost a dead heat and i got all the other winners. So i ended up getting paid £340 for my £16 stake but would of won £27000 and a shot at the 500,000 the following saturday bonus race if i had spent a further £16.
I was so gutted that i didnt do them again!!
Italian Championship Milan - Fiorentina sth like 1,30 7,00 12,00 and I placed 100 Euro on the away. Not so much because I liked it,but I had already placed another with a cousin of mine that Fiorentina would at least draw at the same amount(X2).In their previous game the latter had played superbly but had squandered glorious chances to score. So I had thought to myself:'Woe to their next opponents. They're going to take it out on them.'
In the first 20 minutes the score was 0-2 I think both goals by Chiesa. It finally ended 1-2 and I was very happy that day.Felt extremely sad when the Viola suffered last season.I'm pretty sure they will get back to Serie A.
Threave Rovers against Wick Acadamey in the Scottish Cup two seasons ago, it was just so funny to see one of my local teams in an online bookmaker, and the fact they obviously grossly overestimated them at 1.60 when they are probably the worst cup team in the world let alone Scotland, so I duly tipped and bet on the odds around 5.20 for Threave Rovers offered by William Hill who forgot to do their homework. I was really pleased with that and pleased that I managed to give local info to people and they won money one it Think the final score was 4-2 Anyone remember it.
Galatasaray-AC Milan corr.score 3-2 @ 37,00
Sturm?-Rapid?(Aus.Cup)corr.score 2-2 @ 12,00
small stake desperation-double @ 444,00 after a frustrating and never ending serie
of looser-bets.
I am proud on my three big acys Ive made. In 1999 and 2002 I hade about 1:1300 accy on Italian B and Spain segunda, in june, when they were predictable and only this weekend I made 1:1030 accy on 12 games at our bookie, I ve won about 800 pounds (stake was only about 80p- in our currency of course...).
If they come one a year, I can never fall in red numbers (I bet about 500 pounds a year)...
For Slovenian punters: danes je listek v Topportu, tisti za 263k, vplačan v Modri Laguni. Vedno sem mislil, da si vse tiste listke izmiljujejo...
The most unforgetable bet was actually on a horse, here in Cyprus called Sir Carolos. This is the only bet ever I placed on a horse.
Well the horse was coming in third, when all of a sudden the horse leading the race fell down, the second one who was just behind fell on the first and Sir Carolos obliged at 17/1
Brought a system bet 3/5 and all 5 in with average odds 2.0 and all 5 prevailed (last 1 was a south american game sunday night)...
Had a frustration bet after heavy lost weekend at a correct score bet on always high scoring Rosenborg in Norway league 2:5 and 3:5. Went in and won about 700 Euros.
And yes Jhim I do remember the Wick bet. Won on that 2. Waiting for another scottish cracker bet since then
Can't say that my bettinghistory goes back very far but my favourite bet to this day was in the euro2000. It's not the odds but the situation that made it special. I had £1000 on Portugal, Italy, Holland and France to reach the semies. They did, to around 7 in odds. France v Spain was the last game and Raul blazed a last-minute penalty high over the bar. I was i heaven!
Well,it happened twice,that I can remember.First time it was Hungarian Championship Honved-Zalaegerseg 1-2(ht/ft) 1:2(1:0) with odd @30.00 and second time UEFA Cup(third ruond,second leg) Maccabi-AEK 1-2(ht/ft) 1:4(1:2)with odd @40.00!
Not one particular bet but one night when I was following Z's picks - he had Man u to win against olympiakos, over 2.5 goal, and giggs to score anytime - all three came in - what a night that was - made a fortune.
in footie terms was around 2 years ago when i took Aberdeen @ 8.00 and they beat Hibs 2-0 and also Dundee @ 6.00 when they beat Kilmarnock ..and with the horses i had So Careful in the Ayr Gold Cup i took 66/1 ante post it won at 33/1 and also when i had Joveworth ridden by apprentice Jimmy Fortune at the time who i backed Ante Post @ 100/1.
Probably my best bet was West Ham to beat Man U last season at old trafford .... some goon was offering 14/1 on betfair and just had to take it .... stuck £20 on them and hit the roof when it came off ... went out the next day and Bought a PS2 with the winnings and havent looked back since
ronnie at 15/1 to be top scorer at world cup. i was alo on a bet not long ago at about 20/1 for a x/1 and it came off, it was against birmingham in the cup but it was a few months back so ant remember the team. Lovely odds though
...and these probably started me down the frustrating road (most of the time) that is this gambling lark:
1) Liverpool v Man Utd in the days when Ian Rush was coming to the end (though still doing well) of an incredible playing career. Man Utd was possibly the only club in the top league that he had not scored against and I got an amazing 10/1 for him being top scorer, which duly came in. I'd like to think I'd grasped the concept of value around about then!
2) The second was the time when Jimmy White was a comfortable 12-4 up in the world cup snooker final against against Stephen Hendry and I got the marvellous odds of 10/1 (again) for Hendry to do the job... and I don't think he lost more than another frame or two.
I remember making a packet out of the France '98 World Cup right through to the final when I was there.
Most people will remember it as the tournament where the favourites kept doing as we expected (apart from Croatia as the surprise packet).
By the time the final came around I'd paid for my air fares, hotel bills, and match tickets ... oh and beer money.
Of course, I was soooo sure that Brazil would win that I blew 1/3 of the winnings backing the South Americans in the final. I must have been the only one in the million or so in the Champs Elysses that night that didn't feel like celebrating too hard.
Still, overall it turned into a damn cheap trip, and the football betting experience of a lifetime.

there are two bets that always stick in my mind, the first was over 25 years maybe even up to 30 years ago and I'd been paid and gone straight into ladbrokes after work and one bet had led to another and in the end I'd got a fiver left (after my board) and it was an evening meeting where the bookies stayed open for the first couple of races, so I put me last fiver on a horse called Fir Hill or Firs Hill, the next morning I remember shouting to me Dad from me bedroom what had won the so and so race at where ever, and there it was either 7-1 or 8-1 winner, Oh what a feeling! hooked for life! .
The other bet was over 11 years ago at least and it was one of those things that just stick in your mind and you can't shake it out, Man City were going for promotion(again) from div 2 to div 1 and were playing Birmingham City away in a midweek fixture, and 0-0 kept coming into me head so I put 20pounds on the 0-0 and sure enough 0-0 it was, paid 15-2 or 8s if I remember rightly, great feeling, even though they weren't nowhere near the most profitable bets nor the stakes the biggest placed(although the fiver bet was pretty important) they are the ones that stick in the memory.
