Derby v Sheff Weds

February 13 2003, 10:39 PM

Saturday 15th February

100 Points Derby to beat Sheff Weds @ 1.80 Bet & Win

Team News

Derby striker Fabrizio Ravanelli is pushing even harder for a starting spot against Sheffield Wednesday after completing 90 minutes for the reserves in midweek. The Italian has featured on the substitutes bench for the first-team since returning from Achilles surgery but looked strong as the table-topping second string beat Spurs 4-0. Craig Burley also came through the match and may be in line for a recall. The Rams have no suspension worries as they look to bounce back from their heavy defeat at Portsmouth.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Phil O'Donnell has suffered another injury setback. O'Donnell, who has yet to make an appearance for the Owls this season, tore a thigh muscle in training this week and is expected to be out for a further six weeks. Wednesday captain Trond Soltvedt also faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining an ankle injury in the reserves' goalless draw with Leeds on Wednesday. Simon Donnelly is out for at least three more weeks with a knee injury while Derek Geary will not feature as he is set to go for an operation on his knee. However, Paul McLaren could be named in the squad after recovering from a hip injury and striker Lloyd Owusu, back to full fitness following a knee problem, is also pushing for a place in Chris Turner's starting line-up.

Home / Away Form
Derby have won 3 of their last 5 home games and overall just under half, winning 7 of their 15 league games at Pride Park. Sheff Weds have lost 10 of their 15 away matches which is the poorest record in the Division. They have lost 4 of their last 5 away from Hillsborough with the only win coming at near neighbours Rotherham

Recent Form

Derby’s mini revival was ended at Portsmouth last week in emphatic fashion, before that they had beaten Stoke and Rotherham, netting 3 goals against both.
Sheff Weds have certainly improved since the arrival of Chris Turner from Hartlepool but in truth they could not get much worse. They have have won in 3 league games.

Head To Head
Since 1997, these teams have met 7 times, with all but the one earlier this season in the Premiership. Derby have won 6 of those clashes and drawn the other one. They won the match at Hillsborough in November by the comfortable margin of 3-1.

Value Test

1.80 with Bet & Win is the best price out there so some bookmakers need to be offering 1.62 or less to pass this requirement. Interwetten at 1.60 and William Hill at 1.57 so a tentaive tick is placed in this category.

Summary

Despite losing two key players in Chris Riggott and Malcolm Christie to Middlesbrough, Derby gave Portsmouth a run for their money for a while last weekend. They fell 3 goals behind early on but battled back to 3-2, before conceding another 3. Their revival was orchestrated by Georgi Kinkladze, and the score certainly flattered Portsmouth. Sheff Weds are a poor team, depending solely on the quality of their loan signings to keep them in this Division. I fully expect Derby to complete the double over Wednesday here, and also make it 7 wins in their last 8 games against the Owls.

Lincoln v Darlington

February 13 2003, 10:40 PM

Saturday 15th February

100 Points Lincoln to beat Darlington @ 1.90 Bet & Win

Team News

Lincoln City will be without the services of striker Dene Cropper for the home game with Darlington. Cropper faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining suspected knee ligament damage in the hastily-arranged friendly against Grimsby on Wednesday. Manager Keith Alexander has no other injury concerns to address and welcomes back midfielder Paul Smith from suspension as his side look to force their way back into a play-off position. "My players have worked their socks off this season and its about time someone gave them some credit," insisted Alexander. "At my age I don't want to be a big superstar but after being favourites for relegation, my lads have been absolutely magnificent and I can ask no more of them."

Darlington caretaker-boss Mick Tait has a slight injury concern over Neil Wainwright for the clash with Lincoln at Sincil Bank. The former Sunderland winger limped off 20 minutes from the end of Tuesday's 1-0 home defeat against Rochdale with a slight hamstring strain. However, Wainwright has been involved in training and should be fit once he has undergone treatment from the club physio. Striker Barry Conlon will play his last match before serving a one-match suspension. Danny Mellanby (back) and Neil Maddison (thigh) are both fit again, but Tait may decide not to risk the pair due to a lack of match fitness. Matt Clarke is doubtful after severing the tendon in his hand, but Glenn Naylor is definitely sidelined as he awaits a knee cartilage operation.

Home / Away Form

Lincoln have not played a home game in their last 4 league outings but prior to that played 3 straight at Sincil Bank. They were unbeaten in those 3 games, but only registered 1 win. Overall their home record is an average 6 wins from 14 games.
Darlington can be considered draw specialists away from home drawing 6 of their 15 games, they have also lost 6 of those games. In their last 2 trips on the road they have lost both and only managed 1 goals whilst conceding 4 at the other end.

Recent Form

Lincoln have suffered only a single loss in 10 games which is a fine record. They have won 3 of their last 4 games which were all played away from home which is an excellent showing.
Darlington have lost 3 of their last 5 league games, with 1 win and a draw thrown in for good measure.

Head To Head
In their 9 league meetings since 1997, no away team has managed a win in this fixture. Here at Sincil Bank, Lincoln have won 2 and drawn 2 of their 4 meetings. They fought out a 0-0 draw earlier this season at Darlington.

Value Test

1.90 with Bet & Win so can we see a little 1.73 to qualify this as a value bet. Numerous bookmakers offer this mark or less, Premierbet, Bet365, Sportingbet, Paddy Power and Expekt are just a selection.

Summary

Lincoln have done remarkably well to win 3 games from 4 away from home, and if they can carry that improvement into this home match they have the potential for a comfortable win. Only 1 loss in 10 games has taken them to the fringes of the promotion battle. The main reason has to be their defence which is the tightest defence in the Division. Darlington do draw a lot of matches and that outcome is a big danger but Lincoln will hopefully keep a clean sheet and sneak one or two at the other end.
