ATP Copenhagen
Flashback 2002
In 2002, the KB Hallen was the site of the 14th Copenhagen Open. The tournament was held between February 11th and February 17th and tennis elite from all over gathered in Copenhagen. In the final of Copenhagen Open 2002 the German Lars Burgsmüller won his first ATP TOUR tournament by defeating Belgium's, Olivier Rochus 6/3 6/3.

After a 3-year absence, the Danish tennis star, Kenneth Carlsen, had a brilliant comeback in Copenhagen Open 2002. The Dane only needed 1 hour and 15 minutes to defeat Wayne Arthurs (AUS) 6/4 6/4. The victory moved Kenneth into the second round where he met the Italian player, Davide Sanguinetti. This match became one of the most memorable matches in Copenhagen Open's history. Kenneth kept the tennis audience on the edge of their chairs with merciless shots but in the end he was defeated 6/4 6/7(5) 7/6(9) in the well fought, 3 hour long match.

Another highlight of Copenhagen Open 2002 was the dignified appearance of the once world number one ranking player and one of the most winning tennis players in tennis history, Michael Chang (USA). Unfortunately, for Michael and all those who filled KB Hallen to see him play, he had a first round defeat 6/7(5) 6/1 6/3 by German's, Alex Pretzch.

Press release 23-02-03
Only few surprises in qual’s second round
Eight players now ready for Monday’s final four qualifying singles
Italy’s Massimo Dell’Acqua is playing against Netherland’s Fred Hemmes Jr., who surprisingly defeated the seventh seeded Paul Goldstein from the USA. Gilles Muller from Luxembourg will meet the sixth seeded George Bastl. Swedish player Magnus Larsson, who won Copenhagen Open back in 1992, will have to beat Czech Petr Luxa to enter the main tournament, while forth seeded Tomas Behrend from Germany is playing against fellow countryman Kohlmann, who in second round beat Danish player Printzlau.

So, in total, it was a day with high quality play, but few surprises in a strong field of players. (from official site)

Two picks:

February 24 2003, 12:00 AM

Pless to beat Mamiit at 1,45 Confidence: 7/10
H2H: 0-0
Pless is in good shape and plays on the homeground in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Vinciguerra to beat Vahaly at 1,55 Confidence: 7/10
H2H: 0-0
Vahaly, playing last Saturday in his first career ATP semifinal against Roddick in Memphis, had been suffering with an illness since his quarterfinal victory over Irakli Labadze, and was sick immediately after the match. The 23-year-old, who reached the quarterfinals in Adelaide in January, tried to get some sugar into his body prior to the match but was feeling the effects of dehydration after a competitive first set against Roddick and could not maintain that level in the second, winning just six points before rushing off court to the locker room. "Unfortunately, I did feel a little bit sick. I didn't get to sleep until about 6.30 this morning and still woke up feeling nauseous and sick. When I got to the court, I tried to stall it with some Pepsi and Tylonol and tried different ways to get some sugar in me. " It worked in the beginning of the match, and then for some reason or another, I had some trouble with my depth perception and started to feel nauseous. At the end of the match, I knew I was going to be sick and threw up as soon as it ended. I had to get out of there as soon as it ended and get to the locker room. "I apologize to the fans, who have been so good to me and I couldn't even stop to sign autographs. Unfortunately, I've been throwing up quite badly in the locker room. But it was exciting to be in my first ATP semifinal. It's a huge help for my ranking and obviously for my confidence. I have to learn from these guys and see what kind of holes I have in my game." In my opinion...

February 24 2003, 12:15 AM

...Vinciguerra has a better biorythm today and I don't think that Vahaly is 100% recovered from his illness. Not to mention that Sweden is closer to Denmark than US.

Hi, Pejti
Pless-mamiit & Vinciguerra-Vahaly will play only tomorrow. Vinciguerra seems a little bit risky as he withdraw from a last week tournament. Today I will go for Bovina's win against Schiavone. Bovina leads 3-0 in H2H against Schiavone. Although Bovina's bio isn't great, Schiavone has today a critical bio.
Cheers
