no joke.....thats what a work mate is staking on tuesday. and this is a guy with a large morgage and kids...not someone who can throw large amounts of cash away or so you would think
Anyway i know no one here is likely to be so reckless but a SENSIBLE bet might be intresting...i only usually bet on horses when i go to race meeting for a stag do or something but i,m having a SMALL wager on it. if any of you intrested then it,s

RHINESTONE COWBOY..in the..SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE @ the Cheltenham festival. you can get 3.25 with sportingodds.

P.S big BIG thankyou to MACOTI and JHIM for their replies to my treble post 2 wk ago APPRECIATE IT GUYS

Rhinestone Cowboy .....

March 9 2003, 10:45 AM

is a novice attempting to win the Champion Hurdle, and follow in the footsteps of the likes of Royal Gait and Alderbrook, however all previous novices that were successful were battle hardened from the flat unlike Rhinestone Cowboy.

There is no doubt he has been ultra impressive thus far, but you have to wonder how his jumping which has been novicey at times will hold up under the pace of a Championship race.

Jonjo O'Neill his trainer also runs Intersky Falcon, and is on record saying that if he had the pick he would choose this one. Reading between the lines Jonjo would probably have preferred that Rhinestone Cowboy go for the Supreme Novices rather than the Champion, and delay the tilt for this one another 12 months until he has more experience under his belt.

In summary, your friend is a very brave man to have such a large bet with a few question marks still hanging over the horse. However if the ground does turn up soft on Tuesday then that would favour him I reckon, even though at the odds on offer he looks plenty short enough to me.

I'm delaying my final choice until I  see what the state of the ground is.

Good luck

Sorry to say this but i think the horse will find it hard to win this race,to much going on in this race for Rhinstone to cope with ie other horses form and course is a real tester, hope your friend wins for his wifes sake.

Of all the "bankers" at Cheltenham this coming week, the cowboy is the one I'd be happiest to lay. At current odds of around 2/1, he's shocking value for a novice in a competitive field.

Now, if your mate has one of those fancy ante-post vouchers at 25/1 or bigger, then that's a different story entirely

or was it half of March's wages, there is quite a few pounds difference there.

Just kidding!

In all seriousness

March 9 2003, 5:24 PM

without being rude, anyone who really bets half a months wages on one horse, doesn't need to be gambling unless they are so rich they sleep on a mattress of 100 pound notes. it is not wise !!

only time will tell

I spoke to chap in question again today about this bet...i and found that though he is putting half his pay packet on tomorrow he will raid his savings account if it loses. apperently he won a good few quid last cheltenham and put it into a savings account and has not really dipped into it. he also advised me not to lay it at 2-1 if the ground goes soggy but he has already laid at over 3-1... thats the chance you take at taking early odds.

Having laid it earlier at 9/4, I was able to lay it again just after the first 2 favs stormed in. That really helped keep the odds down for the lay

Bad luck to the guy who risked half his wages, though.

after the 2nd it was hard to see it winning

March 11 2003, 3:55 PM

it clattered the hurdle and i couldn't see it getting back into a top class race to win after that.
