Venables leaves Leeds
Terry Venables
Nine months of hell for El Tel
Leeds United have parted company with manager Terry Venables by mutual consent.

The former England coach had an angry showdown with chairman Peter Ridsdale on Thursday after a poor run of results that has seen the club slump to 15th in the table.

Leeds have lost four games in a row, including an embarrassing FA Cup exit to Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield United, who also knocked them out of the Worthington Cup.

Then on Friday morning Venables brought his rollercoaster ride at Elland Road to an end.

It is expected that first-team coach Eddie Gray will take charge for the rest of the season, starting at Liverpool on Sunday.

Venables took over from David O'Leary in July 2002, but has seen several first-team players sold in an attempt to solve the club's financial crisis that saw their debts rising to £78m.

Within a fortnight of him taking over star defender Rio Ferdinand was sold to rivals Manchester United.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Jonathan Woodgate, Robbie Fowler, Lee Bowyer, Robbie Keane and Olivier Dacourt were also shipped out in a bid to balance the books.

Venables was unhappy at seeing his squad ripped apart and Woodgate's £8m move to Newcastle led to him considering his position with the club.

He decided to stay on until the end of the season, but results have gone from bad to worse since then and both parties now appear to have made a clean break.

As a Leeds fan I´m delighted.

Leeds is going to build up a new team and I think Venables is not the right man to do that.

I´d like to steal Paul Hart from Nott Forest

If Leeds lose this weekend ....

March 21 2003, 9:50 AM

at Liverpool which is likely, and the Birmingham, West Ham and Bolton all win which is entirely possible given their games then Leeds will find themselves in the relegation fight.

They do have too much quality in my eyes to avoid the drop, but who knows because one team normally gets sucked into the drop zone having looked safe.

I'm not suprised Venables has gone, it would also not surprise if more star names are shipped out in the summer. The likes of Kewell, Viduka, Smith, Mills and Robinson will be tracked by many clubs given their financial plight.

Smith and Robinson will probably stay in the summer, however all other players will, it would appear, be for sale at the right price. Kewell to Liverpool seems fairly nailed on...

Re the new manager, would you come to Leeds??

Well

March 21 2003, 11:04 AM

I am with Mark on this as i feel he was the best man for the job and feel he has been misled from the start!
When he took the job he was told he wouldnt have to seel his stars and also that money may be made available and Ridsdale has said that he may of misled Venables when he took him on!
For me Venables is a class coach and i for 1 would love to see him at Liverpool because his style of play would suit us well and we would attack teams which would be nice
If Kewell is nailed on Beaks i am a happy man as is just what we need on the Left side.
I cant imagine many managers taking the job especially a top flight manager as with there debts they are going to have to see even more and hope to unearth some bargains that turn into world beaters!
I would be very dissappointed if Liverpool dont beat them at the weekend!

I so hope Leeds can turn themselves round as they look a team heading in one direction overall.

Leeds at the moment .....

March 21 2003, 11:24 AM

still have enough quality players to be competitive, but the whole stigma surrounding the club makes them only move in one direction and that is down.

A close look at near neighbours Sheff Wed and Bradford can show what happens when you shoot at rainbows and don't deliver. Years of rebuilding are needed to get back to a certain level and for those other Yorkshire clubs at the moment maintaining Division One status is an achievement.

I can't see Leeds tempting Paul Hart from Nottm Forest, he has taken them to the brink of the Premiership, having started with a massive debt and the philosophy of selling their best players. They are now on the verge of becoming competitive again because of their youth structure and selling their best players to offset the debt.

To sell David Prutton and Jermaine Jenas in the last 12 months and still keep turning results is an excellent achievement.
