Scotland V Iceland

March 28 2003, 11:55 PM

Scots look to leaders
LIVE BBC COVERAGE
Scotland v Iceland
Saturday 29 March KO 1500 GMT
Live on BBC Radio Scotland and this website
Highlights on BBC One Scotland at 2335 GMT
Scotland manager Berti Vogts will look to his leaders to provide the inspiration for a win over Iceland in Saturday's Euro 2004 qualifier.

Old Firm captains Paul Lambert and Barry Ferguson are certain to form a central midfield partnership, while Hearts skipper Steven Pressley should bring organisation to the defence.

Pressley is set to win his sixth cap at Hampden and the powerful centre half says Lambert and Ferguson are perfect role models.

"Lambert has got that steely determination and you don't win the European Cup, play for Borussia Dortmund and captain Celtic without it," said Pressley.

"Barry Ferguson is captain of Rangers and Christian Dailly is a strong character."

Vogts is likely to partner Pressley with Dailly and Lee Wilkie after a solid performance from those three in the 2-0 win when the sides met in Reykjavik in October.

Gary Naysmith, who scored along with Dailly in the win in Iceland, is favourite for the berth wide on the left.

And Paul Devlin, who impressed a substitute in last month's friendly defeat by the Republic of Ireland, could get the nod on the opposite flank.

Bradford City's Andy Gray has been drafted into the Scotland squad for the first time following the withdrawal of Scott Dobie, but is unlikely to be pitched in.

OTHER EURO 2004 TEAM NEWS

Vogts' striking options have been limited by the decision of Leicester City's Paul Dickov to undergo surgery.

And Rangers' Steven Thompson is suspended for the Iceland match but available for next Wednesday's game with Lithuania.

Dunfermline's Stevie Crawford is an almost certain starter up front.

And Vogts must decide whether to go with the experienced Don Hutchison, who is lacking first team practice as a result of a long-term injury, or the in-form Kenny Milller, who has only played 10 minutes of full international football.

Vogts may opt to play both men with West Ham's Hutchison playing behind a front two.

Vogts has released young defenders Andy Webster and Gary Caldwell to join the under-21 set up, while full-back Maurice Ross is another suspended for the first of Scotland's matches.

Partick Thistle keeper Kenny Arthur has been drafted into the squad as replacement for third-choice Neil Alexander, who is injured.

A first Hampden victory for Vogts would end Iceland's hopes of finishing second in the group behind Group Five favourites Germany.

The visitors have suffered a blow with striker Heidar Helguson being ruled out with a hamstring injury.

Iceland manager Atli Edvaldsson had intended to pair the Watford man in attack with Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen - that role is likely to go to Marel Baldvinsson of Lokeren.

But first-choice goalkeeper Arni Arason, of Rosenborg, has recovered following three weeks out with a shoulder injury.

Macedonia - Slovakia

March 29 2003, 12:35 AM

Macedonia vs Slovakia 2.60 3.00 2.50

This are average odds on this game.
Macedonian team are ready, fit and no injuries.Training was very effective and players had one day off.
Slovakia team arrived yesterday and they will have training only today before the game.Last info about their team is that best striker and best defender will miss the game.
If Macedonia show only half of game vs England they should win.For me best bet is over 2.5 as they will play offensive to make early lead but also will leave some space for Slovakia attack.
This count also for our u21 team. There was a lot of self confident statements yesterday like giving their best and wining the game. This is result of first game vs Slovakia when the lost 5-0 or 5-1 but with completely different team. This time-first they manage to complete our attack combining two good strikers and also strengthen the defense.

For me Jhim Scotland

March 29 2003, 1:07 AM

have to be confident in the fact that they know they are capable of beating Iceland after winning in Reykavik last time out 2-0.

We are still way short player wise of quality players but i am hoping he starts off with Crawford and Miller up front as both have been doing the business for there clubs..i have to admit i was a little disappointed to see Neil McCann wasn't in the squad as his performances of late have been pretty good for Rangers and his threat of getting the ball into the box would have helped.

The midfield should hold up well against the Icelanders with Ferguson and Lambert trying to control it ...if these two can play it through to the front two then we are capable of causing problems...Good Luck to Scotland ..have to admit the price frightens the life out of me around 1.60-1.70 for us lets hope the hoodo of the past doesn't come back to haunt us.

Ukraine - Spain

March 29 2003, 1:59 AM

Decent weather in Kyiv for the last week, and the NSK Olympiyskiy's pitch was being specifically saved for this game for 3 weeks (since the Arsenal - Metalurg Zaporizzhya league fixture). I expect to see pitch in better than average condition for this country and this time of the year.

Rebrov and Zubov are out through injury for Ukraine. I believe this is a blessing in disguise. Rebrov only started getting decent amount of first-team football in his new club Fenerbache and Zubov despite his obvious talent and leadership abilities is far too erratic to be irreplaceable in the national team. Voronin (Meinz), Shevchenko (AC Milan), Golovko (Dynamo), Kalinichenko (Spartak) should all start and IMO each of them should be more valuable for the home team than the injured duo. Significant fan support is expected, a crowd of 60,000+ will attend.

I expect a scrappy game, most likely low scoring and defensively based since neither team can afford to lose. Under-21 Ukrainian team just drew their 4th game in a row, and I predict the national team could just follow up with the similar result (this would be 3rd draw in 4 matches for the first team). Shevchenko and Voronin are in great shape lately and I hope Ukraine will be able to take something from this game. Lay Spain looks a good pick here.

Romania-Denmark

March 29 2003, 3:07 PM

Two teams which are both hit by injuries who clash here. Denmark are without 4 or 5 regulars and from what I have gathered Romania are without 2 or 3 regulars. The thing that has drawn the most attention regarding this match is by far the pitch, which should be in terrible condition. But both teams want's to play passing football, and so the disadvantage are equal for both teams.

Romania can't afford to loose another home game after their loss against Norway, and I believe they will come out pressing quite hard. Especially the right side of the danish side can face a storm as this place is filled by 3rd choice Thomas Rytter after both Thomas Helveg (AC Milan) and Kaper Bøgelund (PSV) are out injured.

But with Thomas Gravesen (Everton, who seems very eager to perform well) and Christian Poulsen (Schalke) in the center of midfield, I think Denmark have the power to slowly gain some control of the match.

My advice for this match would be to stay away, but if forced to bet, I would probably go for the draw. Maybe a low scoring affair of under 2,5 goals.
