Piacenza-Milan

May 23 2003, 9:00 PM

Piacenza are already relegated and Milan will rest several top stars ahead of the Champions’ League Final, but Rivaldo ought to be given his chance to shine.

The Rossoneri are the only side fighting on three fronts and must complete their Serie A obligations in-between Finals for the Coppa Italia and Europe. Brazilian Rivaldo, perhaps playing his last Serie A game, should start alongside Jon Dahl Tomasson and Serginho at the Stadio Garilli. Goalkeeper Dida is still suffering from a fractured thumb but is hoping to be ready for Old Trafford.

The Biancorossi were doomed to the drop last week, when they lost a 2-0 lead at Parma to emerge with a 3-2 defeat. The defence has been their weak point all season with a massive 60 goals conceded in 33 games.

Dario Hubner has rediscovered his scoring touch and was linked with Milan over the summer – going so far as to tour the US for some friendly matches with the team – so he may be hoping to impress Coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Piacenza: (Probable) Guardalben; Cristante, Campagnaro, Abbate, Tosto; Marchionni, Di Francesco, Maresca, Baiocco; Ferrarese, Hubner

Milan: (Probable) Abbiati; Simic, Roque Junior, Laursen; Kaladze, Brocchi, Ambrosini, Dalla Bona; Rivaldo, Serginho; Tomasson

MILAN PLAYING SECOND FIDDLE

AC Milan are quite happy playing second fiddle to Juventus, but only until next Wednesday's Champions League final.

Juve wrapped up the Serie A championship for the second consecutive year a fortnight ago, but AC are determined to finish the domestic season as runner-up rather than third behind city rivals Inter Milan.

That is why Saturday's last league game of the season against already relegated Piacenza is so important four days before the European showdown with Juventus at Old Trafford.

"We want a win at Piacenza because we still have a chance to take second place in the league," Rossonero coach Carlo Ancelotti declared on Friday.

Victory against the Piacenza minnows and defeat for Inter Milan by Perugia on Saturday would secure the Rossoneri second spot in the league.

"The important thing is to finish the championship well, to win on Saturday ven if our thoughts are on Wednesday's match against Manchester," said Rossoneri defender Martin Laursen.

Piacenza have yet to come to terms with last weekend's 3-2 loss to Parma which condemned them to Serie B next season.

Gigi Cagni's outfit were leading 2-0 at one stage in the first half but then threw it all away in the last five minutes.

Nevertheless, Piacenza will be trying their hardest for a consolation win over Carlo Ancelotti's Milan at the Leonardo Garilli stadium.

"We must conclude the season well, to try and make our fans forget the harsh defeat against Parma that has cost us salvation," said Cagni.

As expected, Ancelotti will rest many of his key players players although Brazilian striker Rivaldo and Filippo Inzaghi have been told they will be called on.

Cagni indicated he will field a three-man attacking line - Dario Hubner, Marco Marchionni and Bogdan Patrascu.

My question is why woudl anyone want to bet on this game with little interest for either side, one cannot win the title and the other is already relegated. Pick a better game, this on e is pointless.

Carlo Ancelotti has named a 20-man squad for the trip to Piacenza:

DEFENDERS: Aubameyang (83), Helveg, Laursen, Giordano (45), Stefani (42), Clayton (17),

MIDFIELDERS: Ba, Brocchi, Dalla Bona, Redondo, Kalambay (44), Dal Bello (41), Pastrello (36)

FORWARDS: Piccolo (39), Bortolotto (37), Matri (34), Nava (46)

But

May 23 2003, 10:24 PM

even if they play no regular players, do you think those players won't enjoy the run out against a Piacenza side that has no need for a win now?? Still don't understand why bet on this game?

maybe, but...

May 23 2003, 11:21 PM

Dunno the motivation and strength of the homeplayers, but in comparable cases the result is sometimes different then expected. When Barcelona played Brugge in Brugge (Champions League) this season they were already qualified and played with some youngsters, but nevertheless they won the game. When the same Brugge played in the Supercup game the week before the season started against champions Genk they played with only youngsters and yet they've beaten Genk at that moment easily. When Mechelen took all youngsters from other teams after their bankrupcy, nobody thought they would take anymore points and yet they managed two homewins (against GBA and Gent), plus a number of draws of which one was in Standard, which was at that moment just exactly in a form-period...
