The spotlight once again invariably falls on the exciting La Liga race as we enter round 35 of the Spanish championship. Real Madrid, Deportivo La Coruna and Real Sociedad have vied for the leadership for most of the season, with none of the trio being able to assert an iron grip on the Primera Division. But with just four games left one mistake now could prove to be very costly indeed.
The current leaders, Real, will travel to Malaga hoping they can do better than their predecessors, who held top spot only to stumble once they had scaled the summit.
Their star striker Nihat Kahveci is confident that Raynald Denoueix’s team can come out on top: "We are favourites, we have taken the leadership at the best moment because we only have four games left, we are first and we depend on ourselves to win the La Liga," he said.
Meanwhile, their nearest challengers, Madrid, face a stern examination of their championship credentials when they venture to Valencia. Rafa Benitez’s side has already delivered a hammer blow to Depor’s title bid, when they defeated Javier Irureta’s outfit 2-1 in the last round of La Liga fixtures.
However, focus has fallen on Club Blanco’s trainer, Vicente Del Bosque, ahead of the game. Out of Europe and seemingly wilting in the chase for league honours speculation has mounted that Del Bosque could be replaced in the summer.
Del Bosque has laughed off the rumours concerning his job: "I am rather embarrassed that there has been so much talk about my future," he said. "I am not bothered if they are looking at other options. All I know is that I am keen and hope to remain as coach, but for the moment I am focusing on the league and aiming to make sure we win an important trophy this season."
Elsewhere, Deportivo take on Celta Vigo hoping to re-establish their champions challenge after it had been derailed by Vala. Coach Irureta is praying that other teams can aid their cause: "It's important to hope our rivals struggle in their games," he said.
