Well, now I can see what turned you off to religion. I think what keeps religion so strong in those states and many others is pandemic Stockholm syndrome on a massive scale that starts in childhood and only gets worse with age.
I don't know much about Eugene. My relatives are about an hour east of Eugene in the vicinity of Blue River -- up in the mountains.
