I'm not sure if you're to this stage yet, but this is something I recommended to both of the Gladiator mods before this one that died...
Roar of the crowd. Get a sound file somewhere of massive cheering, background band music, etc. It will add tremendously to the feel if you play with a crowd instead of hacking at each other in silence.
