Ego Gratification

Some of modern trends of churches are based on trying to make people feel good about themselves. This is stated all through this forum.

A question I have pondered: if someone I like or who makes me feel good about myself is doings something wrong, or violates spiritual integrity, am I still willing to follow their lead? I know many who are going along with some things in the church world because they peronally feel accepted by and like the pied pipers. What is the basis of my faith, my ego feelings and emotions or prayerful yearnings to do what the Lord wants me to do? Its a hard one.

Are the two necessarily mutually exclusive? I mean, just because something feels good emotionally, does that mean it's not from the Lord? I kinda thought he created us along with our emotions. To separate the two seems gnostic and platonic, not Biblical.

Phil you said:

This is a common misperception of the gnostics. The stoics were somewhat nonemotional but not the gnostics. They were the forerunners of the charismatic your-feelings-are-god-speaking-to-you movement.

Here’s a good example of the “feel good” evangelism. Max Lucado of the “Oak Hills Church” [formerly … “of Christ”] has preached and still preaches that all an individual outside of Christ needs to do to be saved (really meaning—to obtain redemption or salvation) is to simply “accept Christ as his personal Savior” and recite the sinner’s prayer.

Do you know what the “sinner’s prayer” is? Well, it takes on various forms and is sometimes done in a “repeat-after-me” fashion. For example:
“Dear God, have mercy on me and save my soul for Jesus’ sake. Amen”

"Dear Lord, please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart. Amen."

"Heavenly Father, I know that I am a sinner and that I deserve to go to hell. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins. I do now receive Him as my personal Lord and Savior. I promise to serve you the best I can. Please save me. In Jesus' name. Amen."

"Dear Jesus, I am sorry for my sins. Please forgive me and give me a new heart. Amen."

While it is truth that “all have sinned” … that “Jesus died on the cross” … that God is merciful and forgives sins, the conversion process that the “sinner’s prayer” suggests is not the whole truth. Although there is no power in the water itself or in baptism itself, but being buried with Christ into his death in water baptism and being resurrected with him (Romans 6:4) is the point in which forgiveness of sins in the blood of the Lamb occurs and the newness of life begins, respectively [in that order].

Max Lucado espouses the denominational doctrine that only believing in Christ and accepting Him as Savior redeems (saves) the sinner. The conclusion, according to the gospel of Max, is that sins are forgiven at that point of belief. Thus, according to the gospel of Max, to “repent and be baptized for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38) means that it doesn’t matter when baptism occurs—sins were forgiven this morning or two weeks ago; be baptized this afternoon or two weeks later.

According to Max, the “feel good” drive from the sinner’s perspective is forgiveness of sins in advance—baptism may be done later on or when it’s convenient. It’s also “ego gratification” on the part of Lucado to make it known to his denominational neighbors that he shares with their doctrine.

...........................THE BOOK

What Happened At the Madison Church of Christ?

There are thousands of churches being taken over across America.

This book is only about one of those churches. It's about the Madison Church Of Christ. By studying the methods used here along with the resource references you might be able to inoculate your church. At the very least you will recognize the signs early on.

Many of the current members of the Madison Church of Christ still don't know what happened.
Some never will know! This book is for them as well.

Madison Church of Christ was a 60 year old church. At one time it was one of the largest churches in the US, and the largest Church of Christ.

It thrived for many years on the vision of it's elders and those of it's ministers. Those visions undoubtably came from the the inspired word of Jesus Christ.

At sometime in the last 10 years there was a deliberate plan by a majority of the elders to take the Madison Church of Christ into a more worldly realm.

They used secrecy, covert planning, and outside sources to scheme and to change the format and direction of the Madison Church of Christ.

The Elders knew that the membership would never approve such a plan. Using the tools of the "Community Church Movement"(consultants, books, seminars, meetings, planters, seeders) they slowly started initiating change so it was never noticed by the members until it was too late.....

At the heart of the plan was the fact that old members were going to be driven off so new techniques could be used to go out and reach the unchurched through new "Contemporary Holy Entertainment" methods developed by the "Community Church Movement"

Old members had to be kept on board long enough to get their plans ready, or the funds would not be there to pay for the new building. So by the plans very nature, it had to be secret.

The church had no plan in effect to renew or approve elders. There was never any need. The elders had always been "as approved by God". 10 of the last 15 elders would begin to shed some doubt on that.

The Elders did not even need a majority at first, because some of the elders went along unwittingly.

This edition starts shortly after some of the members begin to smell something strange in January 2001. Later editions may go back and fill in some of the timeline.

To even start to understand whats happening here, you must read the background materials in the first of the book.

This is only the first edition, and not the end. New editions will be printed as needed. To keep abreast of current changes, please visit our web site; http://www.concernedmembers.com/madison

Here is the list of players;

5 Godly Elders
10 Not so Godly Elders
120 "Deacons" (allegiance unknown)
2,800 - 4,000 church "members"
2 "teners" (people who have publicly confessed to have broken all ten commandments)
Unknown number of "sinners" (This is what the 10 elders call us.)
Unknown number of "demons" (Flying everywhere, to many to count)
