Dear Friends in Christ:

Today's lesson stresses the need to maintain that which was bequeathed to us by our spiritual forebearers. It is easy for later generations to take for granted and neglect their spiritual heritage. In this lesson we provide some suggestions that will be helpful if followed. Please share this lesson with other Christians. Either we will maintain our back to the Bible movement or we will lose it.

    The Restoration of New Testament Christianity is a continuing quest and goal for all who love God. We have the tendency to forget mistakes of the past and to lose our way. History demonstrates that departures have occurred and such will continue to plague us.

    Within 40 years of the time that Alexander Campbell began his work, he and his co-workers had forgotten their objections to human organizations and ecclesiastical structures over the church, thus they organized the American Christian Missionary Society. In another forty years some of the heirs of those men (the Disciples of Christ/Christian Churches) had gone full circle back into denominationalism.

    To Maintain Our Restoration

    God wants us to maintain good works (Tit. 3:14). Surely we should strive to maintain the noble cause of the restoring the primitive Church of Christ. Such will not happen by accident. It demands much thought and determined effort on our part.

    1. We must know, understand and appreciate the history of our movement. We need to be acquainted with the great men who blazed the trail before us. Not only do we need to know of their sacrifices and labors, but also the problems and controversies they faced. It is beneficial to see the mistakes they made, lest we repeat their errors. A historian once noted that he who does not learn the lessons of history is doomed to repeat the mistakes of history.

      To gain the above information, we must read the history and biography of the Restoration Movement. Every saint should read Earl West's Search for the Ancient Order, Homer Hailey's Attitudes and Consequences of the Restoration Movement and Christians Only by J. D. Murch. All would be blessed and strengthened by reading the Memoirs of Alexander Campbell by Robert Richardson; the Life of Elder John Smith by J. A. Williams; The Life and Times of David Lipscomb by Earl West; The Life of Elder Barton Stone by John Rogers; Ben Franklin, the Eye of the Storm by Earl West; J. D. Tant, Texas Preacher by F. Y. Tant; and W. W. Otey, Contender for the Faith by Cecil Willis. Of course there are numerous other excellent biographies. They should be placed in church libraries, called to the attention of the congregation and highly recommended.

    2. Preachers need to present sermons on the concept of and our commitment to restoring original Christianity. Without this our people will soon be destroyed by their lack of knowledge in this area (Hos. 4:6). Lessons are needed that tell brethren about the heroes of the faith and the price paid to bring us where we presently stand. Thus did Paul in Hebrews 11. We must help today's disciples to know the sacrifices made and the debt we owe to those who fought and won the good fight of faith (I Tim. 6:12). Buy, read, and use the classic books of Restoration sermons of men like Ben Franklin, T. W. Brents, N. B. Hardeman and others.

    3. Congregations should plan series of lessons on the Restoration Movement using knowledgeable men to lead the discussions.

    4. Bro. Bill Humble's video series Back to the Bible: How We Got There: How We'll Stay There, should be purchased and frequently used in classes and with new converts to help them see where we came from, how we got where we are and the necessity of sticking to God's word if we expect to get where we are going.

    5. We need special, in-depth lectureships and workshops on Restoration history such as that conducted annually by the elders of the North Lexington Church in Lexington, KY. Ideally there should be programs conducted throughout the land. Each could lay emphasis on the origins of the church in their own region.

    6. We need writers to carefully research and write the biographies of great Christians of the past lest the stories be lost. Likewise we need to publish books that recount the history of the rise and progress of the Restoration Movement in the various states and in the nations of the world. The Disciples of Christ have done this for many states, but their presentations give a very slanted view of Restoration history.

    7. Our schools that train preachers should include a course in Restoration History as a requirement for graduation for all such students. Just as teachers need to know the history of education, so our young men need to know their roots.

    Self Examination

    Every Christian needs to examine himself to determine if he is yet in the faith (II Cor. 13:5). Erosion of faith is a slow but steady experience and at first, imperceptible. By the time it is seen, it is hard to stop the destructive process. Elders need to refresh their minds as to just what it means to restore the first century church, then ask the hard question, "Is our congregational program loyal to that idea?" If not, "What steps must we take to remedy the situation?" Preachers need to carefully review their sermons and Bible classes asking, have I given adequate attention to "the old paths?" Have I taught and led the people to walk therein? (Jer. 6:16). Moses charged Israel to: "Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy fathers, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee" (Deut. 32:7).

    We who are heirs of those who made their exodus from the bondage of sectarianism would be blessed beyond measure if we would likewise ponder our past.

    Let us hold fast to the ancient gospel. Let us preach it boldly. May we never be ashamed of our heritage. What a tragedy if we forget and lose all that has been won by the blood, sweat and tears of past generations. Rather, let us "be...imitators of them who through faith and patience inherited the promises" (Heb. 6:12). Let us maintain the restoration!

What About the Postmodern Revisionists and Change Agents?

I think it would be a good idea if those who have some knowledge or historical perspective of the Restoration Movement post messages here and provide information to help us better understand our heritage and the focus that these great men had in their objective to restore New Testament Christianity as it was in the first century and to reject denominationalism.

Meanwhile, in this postmodern era, a group of men and women are now clamoring for change of direction and of God’s directives for the church. These advocates for change focus on the negatives pertaining to the history of our heritage and on the culture-driven principle of conformity and compromise—thus, the label “revisionists” appropriately describes their mentality and behavior.

It would be a great learning experience for viewers to read well-researched materials that compare and contrast this group of men: Hardeman, Lipscomb, the Campbells, et al; and this group of change advocates: Rubel Shelly, Max Lucado, Rick Atchley, Lynn Anderson, Al Maxey, Randall Harris, Royce Money, Douglas Foster, Jeff Walling, Tim Woodroof, John Mark Hicks, et al.

When the barbatic Taliban ordered the demolition of Afghanistan’s gigantic statues of Buddha, the world was aghast and outraged. But many members of churches of Christ are standing by in virtual silence as a hostile band of liberal scholars labor to distort and destroy the history of our noble movement to restore New Testament Christianity.

Professors from some of our Christian universities have issued a number of books that are carefully contrived distortions of the history of our people. Historical revisionism is common in both the secular and the religious world. The Japanese have revised their history books to lessen the guilt and shame of their brutal aggressions in World War II. Marxist academics are promoting a revisionist statement of our nation’s history. They eliminate many things honorable and noble and replace them with sordid, ignoble insinuations and innuendos. Every aspect of the past is interpreted in the darkest light. Every failure is magnified. Every noble deed and accomplishment is discounted or discredited. Special attempts are made to delete the influence of Christianity in the founding and shaping of the nation. It is clear that such revisionist historians hate America, her institutions and heroes.

We have revisionists among us, operating primarily in our Christian universities.

  • They tell the unknowing that Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone were the founders of churches of Christ.

  • They tell us that the goal of the early pioneers was simply a unity movement with denominational churches such as today’s ecumenical movement.

  • They say that churches of Christ actually began in 1906 as a breakaway splinter group from the Disciples of Christ/Christian Churches.

  • They imply that our fathers were in the wrong a century ago for objecting to the use of instrumental music and missionary societies.

  • They play down the great growth and victories of our brethren over the last century.

  • They cannot see any progress in racial relations in the church, preferring to dwell on the failures of the past, failures typical of most religious groups of that era.

  • They denigrate and dismiss great brotherhood heroes of the past, implying that they were unlearned and ignorant men who distorted the gospel and led us into the morass of legalism

  • They glorify liberal false teachers such as W. Carl Ketcherside and Leroy Garrett. They paint them as having credibility and influence among the mainstream churches which they never had.

  • They use selected quotes and experiences from the lives and writings of early restoration preachers, ignoring the larger picture, and use them to rewrite the record of what actually happened.

  • All of this is done under the guise of scholarship and a pious pretense of loving the church of Christ and just wanting to tell the story of our past.

  • If they are left unchallenged, the church, as she once existed, will eventually cease to be. In her place will be another Protestant denomination bearing the image of their revised story of the churches of Christ.

Our revisionist historians bear the same disdain for the church that the Marxist historians bear for our great nation. The message of both should be rejected and they should be ejected from their teaching posts. If the Marxist professors so dislike America and love Cuba, let them go teach in Cuba’s university. If our historians have such a low appreciation for the church and such a glowing view of the Christian Churches/Disciples of Christ, let them seek employment there.

It is tragic that such revisionists harbor such dislike for the church of their fathers. It is more tragic that so many Christians are watching in shameful silence while the destruction transpires.

Garry Holloway and Douglas Foster and The Crux of the Matter by Jeff Childers, Douglas Foster and Jack Reese. All of these professors are associated with either Abilene Christian and Pepperdine Universities.

What Happened at the Madison Church of Christ?

There are thousands of churches being taken over across America.

This book is only about one of those churches. It's about the Madison Church Of Christ. By studying the methods used here along with the resource references you might be able to inoculate your church. At the very least you will recognize the signs early on.

Many of the current members of the Madison Church of Christ still don't know what happened.
Some never will know! This book is for them as well.

Madison Church of Christ was a 60 year old church. At one time it was one of the largest churches in the US, and the largest Church of Christ.

It thrived for many years on the vision of it's elders and those of it's ministers. Those visions undoubtably came from the the inspired word of Jesus Christ.

At sometime in the last 10 years there was a deliberate plan by a majority of the elders to take the Madison Church of Christ into a more worldly realm.

They used secrecy, covert planning, and outside sources to scheme and to change the format and direction of the Madison Church of Christ.

The Elders knew that the membership would never approve such a plan. Using the tools of the "Community Church Movement"(consultants, books, seminars, meetings,planters,seeders) they slowly started initiating change so it was never noticed by the members until it was too late.....

At the heart of the plan was the fact that old members were going to be driven off so new techniques could be used to go out and reach the unchurched through new "Contemporary Holy Entertainment" methods developed by the "Community Church Movement"

Old members had to be kept on board long enough to get their plans ready, or the funds would not be there to pay for the new building. So by the plans very nature, it had to be secret.

The church had no plan in effect to renew or approve elders. There was never any need. The elders had always been "as approved by God". 10 of the last 15 elders would begin to shed some doubt on that.

The Elders did not even need a majority at first, because some of the elders went along unwittingly.

This edition starts shortly after some of the members begin to smell something strange in January 2001. Later editions may go back and fill in some of the timeline.
