Do our emotions effect the way we perceive truth?

There seems to be quite a bit of research on how we can be manipulated by our emotions. I found this on a political forum thread, and submit for those who are interested.

Emory Study Lights Up the Political Brain

"When it comes to forming opinions and making judgments on hot political issues, partisans of both parties don't let facts get in the way of their decision-making, according to a new Emory University study. The research sheds light on why staunch Democrats and Republicans can hear the same information, but walk away with opposite conclusions.
The investigators used functional neuroimaging (fMRI) to study a sample of committed Democrats and Republicans during the three months prior to the U.S. Presidential election of 2004. The Democrats and Republicans were given a reasoning task in which they had to evaluate threatening information about their own candidate. During the task, the subjects underwent fMRI to see what parts of their brain were active. What the researchers found was striking.
"We did not see any increased activation of the parts of the brain normally engaged during reasoning," says Drew Westen, director of clinical psychology at Emory who led the study. "What we saw instead was a network of emotion circuits lighting up, including circuits hypothesized to be involved in regulating emotion, and circuits known to be involved in resolving conflicts." Westen and his colleagues will present their findings at the Annual Conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Jan. 28.
Once partisans had come to completely biased conclusions — essentially finding ways to ignore information that could not be rationally discounted — not only did circuits that mediate negative emotions like sadness and disgust turn off, but subjects got a blast of activation in circuits involved in reward — similar to what addicts receive when they get their fix, Westen explains.
"None of the circuits involved in conscious reasoning were particularly engaged," says Westen. "Essentially, it appears as if partisans twirl the cognitive kaleidoscope until they get the conclusions they want, and then they get massively reinforced for it, with the elimination of negative emotional states and activation of positive ones."
During the study, the partisans were given 18 sets of stimuli, six each regarding President George W. Bush, his challenger, Senator John Kerry, and politically neutral male control figures such as actor Tom Hanks. For each set of stimuli, partisans first read a statement from the target (Bush or Kerry). The first statement was followed by a second statement that documented a clear contradiction between the target's words and deeds, generally suggesting that the candidate was dishonest or pandering.
Next, partisans were asked to consider the discrepancy, and then to rate the extent to which the person's words and deeds were contradictory. Finally, they were presented with an exculpatory statement that might explain away the apparent contradiction, and asked to reconsider and again rate the extent to which the target's words and deeds were contradictory.
Behavioral data showed a pattern of emotionally biased reasoning: partisans denied obvious contradictions for their own candidate that they had no difficulty detecting in the opposing candidate. Importantly, in both their behavioral and neural responses, Republicans and Democrats did not differ in the way they responded to contradictions for the neutral control targets, such as Hanks, but Democrats responded to Kerry as Republicans responded to Bush.
While reasoning about apparent contradictions for their own candidate, partisans showed activations throughout the orbital frontal cortex, indicating emotional processing and presumably emotion regulation strategies. There also were activations in areas of the brain associated with the experience of unpleasant emotions, the processing of emotion and conflict, and judgments of forgiveness and moral accountability.
Notably absent were any increases in activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain most associated with reasoning (as well as conscious efforts to suppress emotion). The finding suggests that the emotion-driven processes that lead to biased judgments likely occur outside of awareness, and are distinct from normal reasoning processes when emotion is not so heavily engaged, says Westen.
The investigators hypothesize that emotionally biased reasoning leads to the "stamping in" or reinforcement of a defensive belief, associating the participant's "revisionist" account of the data with positive emotion or relief and elimination of distress. "The result is that partisan beliefs are calcified, and the person can learn very little from new data," Westen says.
The study has potentially wide implications, from politics to business, and demonstrates that emotional bias can play a strong role in decision-making, Westen says. "Everyone from executives and judges to scientists and politicians may reason to emotionally biased judgments when they have a vested interest in how to interpret 'the facts,' " Westen says.
Coauthors of the study include Pavel Blagov and Stephan Hamann of the Emory Department of Psychology, and Keith Harenski and Clint Kilts of the Emory Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences."

Interesting quotes

November 22 2016, 6:17 PM

It is, in fact, nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wreck and ruin without fail. It is a very grave mistake to think that the enjoyment of seeing and searching can be promoted by means of coercion and a sense of duty. To the contrary, I believe it would be possible to rob even a healthy beast of prey of its voraciousness, if it were possible, with the aid of a whip, to force the beast to devour continuously, even when not hungry, especially if the food, handed out under such coercion, were to be selected accordingly
Albert Einstein; quoted in "Autobiographical Notes", Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist, Paul Schilpp, ed. (1951), pp. 17-19.

''The aim of public education is not to spread enlightenment at all; it is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States, whatever pretensions of politicians, pedagogues other such mountebanks, and that is its aim everywhere else.'' -- H. L. Mencken, The American Mercury

Sorry, Dianna, that we let your good article get swamped. Here is one paragraph which shows up in Scripture and medical science and which makes it dangerous to let anyone tamper with your brain: it is not a computer but a living physically and spiritual entity with the spirit maybe being eternal.

Those have been purpose driven to lie, cheat and steal the property of widows and honest wage earners, boast about following a 10 year plan to literally restructure the brain. For instance, Rick Atchley boasts that "we took our youth to hear the best christian bands: we taught our youth to leave our movement. If you read sermons Rubel Shelly had a long drum beat which is still followed: You never preach a sermon without speaking of "our heritage" or "our traditions" which includes all of the key teachings of the historic Church of Christ.

The present Kairos Church Planting plot active in our apostate churches intending to supplant the existing churches with an Ethical (ethos) or Regenerated (Renovare) church all of which will be instrumental which is REQUIRED to keep CULTIFIED in line.

Once your spirit has been cracked it cannot be put together again. The saving grace is well documented that Jesus came for a small SECT of Lost Spirits who are not OF the World and will not be seduced.

We saw in the last election that the CONTROLERS made it clear that the CONTROLLED could not be DEprogrammed and with billions of dollars and a drumb beat proving that no one was ignorant enough to reject the CLAN. However, truth gets to the truthful as if by magic.

Those OF the World for whom Jesus did not pray are Right brained and can be reached only by emotion. They claim that they are SPIRITUAL but the Rational brain is defined as the SPIRITUAL because it can process TRUTH which is THE WORD. The mantra is ANTI-RATIONAL which by definition is IRRATIONAL. We have noted that C. Leonard Allen now leading LU claims that god is ECSTATIC or irrational. The WORD is defined as God's RATIONAL principle so the irrational are ANTI-LOGOS and hold workshops to prove it.

Beginning in 2000 the last day begins and the "Devil is in a panic because He knows that he has a short time or SHORT KAIROS. Trinity is based on the tripple goddesses and the Mother Goddess such as the Babylon Mother of Harlots CAN be a male.

Seduction, Sophistry, and the Woman with the Rhetorical Figure

p. 74 Logos is incommunicable to itself--as its referential instability precludes stable meaning. Plato accounts for this instability by suggesting
.....this is the result of willfully deceitful and manipulative rhetors
.....who use language to lead audiences away from the truth.
.....Plato theorizes that sophists uses of language
.....have the purpose of flattering and deceiving hearers
.....and obfuscating the truth,

whereas his system of dialecticts will produce truth, based on the belief that logos (rational, deliberate logos) has the function of communicating and revealing being.

The fact that NO MORTAL has anything to say beyond what God has revealed is repeated over and over. Yet, the KAIROS cult seeks the TIME and PLACE to mount an attack by speaking or singing anything that is self-authored. This is such a dangerous area that:
1. Scripture uses only SPEAK or READ and defines speakers, singers or instrument players as hypocrites.
2. The Spirit OF Christ says of those who do NOT speak what God has supplied that THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM.
3. Ephesians 4 which they lie about as "Unity in Diversity" commands APT elders to silence the cunning craftsmen or sophists: speakers, singers or instrument players in religion. These are the marks of men LYING IN WAIT TO DECEIVE.
4. We have noted that charismatic ecstasy of KOMA is induced by musical instruments.

Therefore, wiser than all theologians Plato in Georgias understood that.

There is no genuine speaker who has has mastered self who is being (unified, coherent, and real). Georgias would argue that rather than human beings, we are human not beings--that is to say, humans becomings: self in the flux, in process, in motion, in kinesis: and are false selves, always already in self-contradiction. This sublect in flux is the necessary complement to a fluctiating reality.

Georgias notion of KAIROS is based on the notion of occassion--of vascillating moments,
time and opportunity--and of the relative (hence the irrationality) of arguments and truth.

In short, different rhetorical moments occasion [OCCASIO IS KAIROS] different subjects.. This discourse situationality is not to be mistaken for the Platonic notion of matching discourses and souls (as argued in Phaedrus), nor for the Aristotelian requirements of assuming a different theme to match the audience (Rhetoric bk 2), for both these methods assume the control and mastery of the discourse situation lies in the speaker--goverened only by the exigency and purpose.

On the contray, Georgias is suggesting something other than a techne. He is not suggestiong that one be "true" to the rhetorical situation by adopting the appropriate posture.

Rather, he is arguing that the situation, the KAIROTIC movement a new subject--a hypoocritical SUBJECT, from the Greek word hypocrites.. The hypocritical subjects interprets what appears to be happening, and is engrossed [indeed, his existence is made possible by the acting] in the events of the stage.
[mendacium untruth, falsehood. to believe a lie a fable,
Fiction (opp. historic truth): “poëtarum, counterfeit

Right!

Whose "music" and "rhetoric" control?

Answer: It's that of the contemporary change agents: the contemporary "Senior" Minister; the contemporary "Worship Leader"; the contemporary "Praise/Worship Team [Church of Christ CHOIR]."

Re: Do our emotions effect the way we perceive truth?

November 25 2016, 12:16 AM

Dianna has posted some facts which are SALVATION ISSUES. With little exception groups calling themselves Christians engage in religious OBSERVATIONS to which Jesus said "the kingdom does not come."

They all live or die as institutions based on the turf battles that "worship must be performed for the group by well-legalized forms of MUSIC."

The Judas bag or box is pictured for us on "clay vessels." The bag is for carrying the mouthpieces of wind instruments. Judas didn't know until too late that the SOP also meaning PSALLO was the mark that he was the familiar friend in Psalm 41 who would attempt to Alarm or Triumph over Jesus. This is the "vocal or instrumental rejoicing or rhetoric" which was outlawed for the Church of Christ (the Rock) in the wilderness.

We have posted many quotations from clay tablets onward that religious musicians intend to hurt you but make you feel joy such as the "runner's high" inducing KOMA. This is the role of the Muses led by Apollon who are called LOCUSTS. They intend to lull you to sleep and give you the Scorpion tail sting of death.

One of many papers on the effect of music. You will notice that the plotted activity of various forms of music are all on the right hemisphere. The music switches a relay which makes it impossible to use rational thinking. Irrational thinking is the Purpose Driven Plot as they mock the RATIONAL minds. They cannot grasp whatever the "scholarly" level that the WORD is the RATIONAL principle and power of a Rational God Who warns everyone that He only reveals Himself in Words either read or spoken.

Nimrod the Babylon "son" of a mother goddess led around a musical team of women claiming that they could regenerate morals through external means. He was a hunter AGAINST God.

Jude concurs: referring to the Instrumental-Trinitarian-Perverted worship at Mount Sinai he says that they were FOREORDAINED and therefore "old spirits." Interesting of the Kairos Church Planting program, Kairos is the demon or spirit son of Zeus as as Hermes or Mercury he is the CONDUCTOR OF DEFUNCT SPIRITS INTO HELL. As he appears as New Hermeneutics, his work includes music as the god of Thieves and Liars and Merchants.

Re: Do our emotions effect the way we perceive truth?

November 26 2016, 9:54 AM

Emotions certainly can interfere with how a person or church views the truth. I am troubled and concerned about the state of the Lord's church everywhere including my own church. I have been observing a gradual progression now become a more steady progression away from the Bible towards man made ideas. We are allowing these changes right under our nose. As a most recent example our song leader used to lead one or two songs around Christmas time. Now he has been leading a different one each Sunday for the month of November. There's no telling how bad it will be by the end of December. When I was younger the elders of my generation never would have allowed such pagan rituals to be part of our worship. Another example is singing happy birthday after church. What happened is the church secretary started listing birthdays in the church bulletin. Our song leader took it upon himself to start leading the church in singing happy birthday to everyone listed in the bulletin for that week. Isn't worship supposed to be for God? When I said something to him about it he shrugged it off by saying that is why he waited until the closing prayer. This is why I usually don't say anything at all about what I see and I guess why I am venting here right now. Another thing is I have never said anything to the elders about our first Sunday "fellowship" meals. I just don't go. They started having a meal on 5th Sundays several years ago. When we started searching for a new preacher they decided to have a meal after the morning worship whenever we had a guest speaker trying out. Now that we have hired a preacher they have continued having these meals in our building once every month. It is like only a few of us know about First Corinthians chapter 11. When I listen to what other churches are doing it is much worse so I feel like I have no other option unless it's to stop going anywhere but then I would be disobeying Hebrews 10:25. I also don't question the preacher about the bible he is preaching from but I know it's not an original one. He is very knowledgeable and tries very hard to do a good job but wrong is wrong. Afraid if I say something to him about it being unauthorized he will somehow not take it the right way. Could go on but think you get the picture. It is troubling to try to worship in spirit and truth understanding there are so many ways we are deviating from the truth in the word of God. It is so depressing watching the church change.

Re: Do our emotions effect the way we perceive truth?

Thanks for the comments, Nancy. Most of us grew up where the assembly was not confused with the natural and good "fellowship" among the members. I grew up in the non-institutional nest of north Alabama. However, it was quite common for the whole community to gather for fun and food disconnected from the buildings. I don't think anyone saw that so much as a "salvation issue" but the awareness that it is easy to fall into a trap. The literal concept of "worship" is to bow or fall on your face in the presence of God. Not even the most conservative groups have escaped the planned plot to "turn school of Christ into a theater for holy entertainment."

Hebrews 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn,
.....which are written in heaven,
.....and to God the Judge of all,
.....and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Hebrews 12:24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant,
.....and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
Hebrews 12:25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh.
.....For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth,
.....much more shall not we escape,
.....if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
Hebrews 12:26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying,
.....Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
Hebrews 12:27 And this word, Yet once more,
.....signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken,
.....as of things that are made,
..... that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved,
.....let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably
.....with reverence and godly fear:
Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

What is TRUTH?

November 26 2016, 6:43 PM

John 18:36-38 (KJV)

Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

[37] Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

[38] Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all .

That is the question to us all...What is Truth?

What IS truth:John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

The WORD or LOGOS is the SANCTIFYING power of God. If you do NOT SPEAK the LOGOS then you cannot be of value. The Spirit OF Christ in Isaiah said of those who do NOT SPEAK the Word that THERE IS NO LIGHT IN THEM.

That sounds like a SALVATION ISSUE and your FOUNDATION is built on people who MOCK the Regulative Principle never able to grasp that God's WORD is defined as the Regulative or Governing Principle. It excludes rhetoric, personal opinions, personal experiences, singing, playing instruments or acting. So if you assemble for the PURPOSE of self=speaking, singing, playing instruments or fleecing the lambs there can BE no SALVATION.

ONLY A little FLOCK of lost spirits are OF TRUTH can hear the Word. For instance they are quite boastful about stirring up worship wars because:

They see SPEAKING the Truth as SINGING that which is NOT the truth.

THE LITTLE FLOCK WILL SING!

The Little Flock

In terms of size this is a relatively small number of people. We see in this section that it is the Father’s good pleasure to give this little flock the kingdom. Thus they must have achieved the highest possible standing of righteousness, holiness and godliness in Jesus Christ. These are those who have reached a place of perfection in Christ Jesus and follow in His footsteps.

In my opinion this sounds like the 144,000 spoken of in Revelation. It says, “Then I looked, and lo, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him a hundred and forty-four thousand who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.” (Revelation 14:1) Also it says of these people that, “…it is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes; these have been redeemed from mankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are spotless.” (Revelation 14:4-5)

These people have reached the completed state of being transformed into the image of Christ. There is no lie in their mouth, they are spotless and it says they “follow the Lamb wherever he goes,” and to be a true follower you must be like Jesus in every way. It is no wonder that it would be the Father’s good pleasure to give this flock the kingdom.

What we also see about these people is that when they enter God’s kingdom they enter singing for it says, “…they sing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the earth.” (Revelation 14:3) They truly have reason for joy in the Lord and they sing a new song that only they will learn.

Re: ATTN: Ken

November 26 2016, 11:35 PM

You cannot even Cut-N-Paste can you?

Rev. 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are VIRGINS. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.

Now, if you are not a DEAD VIRGIN here is the command for YOU. When you hear this SINGING you are supposed to TAKE HEED:

Rev. 14:3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four BEASTS, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

Rev. 14:6 And I saw ANOTHER angel fly in the midst of heaven,
.....having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth,
.....and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

Rev. 14:7 SAYING with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him;
.....for the hour of his judgment is come:
.....and worship him that MADE heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

Now, if you are ALIVE YOUR marching order is WOE, WOE better quit stroking one another's pleasure centers and obey the DIRECT command to GO and teach what JESUS commanded to be taught and observed. If you remember, He didn't teach you to SING and "make the lambs dumb before the slaughter."

I Submit that we have heard the SINGING BEFORE THE BEASTS as a SUPERNATURAL SIGN.

Because this was a sign of JUDGMENT warning you to preach the WORD to all nations we might note that the ELDERS are those who let the wolves in and had fired God when demanding a KING. The Beasts are:

...........................THE BOOK

What Happened at the Madison Church of Christ?

There are thousands of churches being taken over across America.

This book is only about one of those churches. It's about the Madison Church Of Christ. By studying the methods used here along with the resource references you might be able to inoculate your church. At the very least you will recognize the signs early on.

Many of the current members of the Madison Church of Christ still don't know what happened.
Some never will know! This book is for them as well.

Madison Church of Christ was a 60 year old church. At one time it was one of the largest churches in the US, and the largest Church of Christ.

It thrived for many years on the vision of it's elders and those of it's ministers. Those visions undoubtably came from the the inspired word of Jesus Christ.

At sometime in the last 10 years there was a deliberate plan by a majority of the elders to take the Madison Church of Christ into a more worldly realm.

They used secrecy, covert planning, and outside sources to scheme and to change the format and direction of the Madison Church of Christ.

The Elders knew that the membership would never approve such a plan. Using the tools of the "Community Church Movement"(consultants, books, seminars, meetings, planters, seeders) they slowly started initiating change so it was never noticed by the members until it was too late.....

At the heart of the plan was the fact that old members were going to be driven off so new techniques could be used to go out and reach the unchurched through new "Contemporary Holy Entertainment" methods developed by the "Community Church Movement"

Old members had to be kept on board long enough to get their plans ready, or the funds would not be there to pay for the new building. So by the plans very nature, it had to be secret.

The church had no plan in effect to renew or approve elders. There was never any need. The elders had always been "as approved by God". 10 of the last 15 elders would begin to shed some doubt on that.

The Elders did not even need a majority at first, because some of the elders went along unwittingly.

This edition starts shortly after some of the members begin to smell something strange in January 2001. Later editions may go back and fill in some of the timeline.

To even start to understand whats happening here, you must read the background materials in the first of the book.

This is only the first edition, and not the end. New editions will be printed as needed. To keep abreast of current changes, please visit our web site; http://www.concernedmembers.com/madison
