Questions in building of a Classic

I'm impressed with the design of the Classic Iceflyer and the wood/epoxy construction. I want to get started as soon as I can--couple questions

1-What are some thoughts on using solid Douglas Fir and fir plywood instead of expensive Sikta Spruce?
-How low of a grade of wood should I use for my first protype boat.
2-Where can I get hardware--are there some good plans in making some of the hardware pieces?
3-How strong is the plywood bottom connection to the fuselage sides.
4-What are the limits in how old of a sail (design) to use?

I appreciate anybody's thoughts and suggestions

Thanks
