I used ordinary spruce.Was able to purchase 1 x 12 x16ft.at local lumber yard.covered boat completely with glass cloth using West System epoxy.I am in 2nd year of sailing this boat and have put it through some very hard use,especialy this year with no problems.You can see my boat on this web site at photos from the field and at detailed build photos. I read somewhere that poplar is a good second choice after Sitka spruce,Similar strengh to weight but less rot resistance. I know someone who used yellow cedar (cypress) with good results but it's probably harder to find than Sitka spruce unless you live inthe northwest.

I used Ash and didn't cover it with glass. ($2.00 a bf rough) Was able to get 14" wide pieces. Used West System to hold it together. Possibly heavier than others but is flexible and strong. With the lakes around here heavy isn't so bad. Have been out only 5 times. It's a blast.

Used oregon pine here in Australia. West epoxy 3 coats. Finish coats to be yellow. Beams covered in fibreglass cloth.Present weight with no top coat is 69kg. Maiden voyage target for end of March. Intend to use NP 8.5m2 sail. Wes.

I ask a few days here in Germany about "Sitka spruce"
which is used in the original plans (thanks a lot for
that !!).So this kind of wood is very hard to get here,I used "normal" spruce (Fichte)and it worked well.Weight is fully rigged about72 kg.
