Windsurfing sails are generally strong when new but the clear monofilm gets brittle with UV exposure over time.
So for an experiment (why not?), Im thinking about spray painting a "panel or two" on an old experimental sail to prevent UV damage.
Last night, I used some "laquer?" spray paint on an old sail and so far it doesnt seem to have caused any problems but I know from past experience that some solvents can ruin the "plastic" sail material.
So Im wondering if anyone knows of potential bad effects from the solvents in spray paint weakening the sail materail? The particular material Im interested in is the "monofilm" or clear mylar. I beleive it is on the order of 5 to 7 mil thick. A long time ago, I heard from one source I condisder fairly reliable that this would be ok..

Most people I know simply use 303 Aerospace Protectant on their kayaks, small boats, etc. It's expensive but seems to work.
It's at: http://www.303products.com/main.php

THere is a guy named "Tapedude"-something who routinely sells wind surfing sails on eBay. He often mentions in his listing that he has applied anti-UV spray, or sometimes has brushed it on. From his description it sounds like he is refering to a product that is custom made for the application.
Hope this helps! Bob
