I made some runners this last fall, and there really is a wide range of thought on how to make them. I won't claim to know what is best, but I don't really think anyone does. I'd just wing it, if I was you. I'd go to Sarns Hardware and view their 30" set and then mimic them as best you can. The only things that really matter are that they are absolutely straight, and that the rocker is right. You won't get the rocker from a template either, so you may as well make them like you want and then put the rocker in afterwards.

After spending hours and hours on my runners, I'd suggest you just buy a set from Sarns, or a used local set. Where are you? There is a local guy that makes sarns knock-offs at a discount http://www.davesmachining.com/Services.html

Check them out. If you are trying to save money by making your own, you may save a little especially if you have all the tools, but not too much.

Thanks for the information on your runners and the link. Located up in Manitoba, Canada here. Should be able to get something produced up here that will work alright. Have found a few designs for insert runners as well. Thanks again for your assistance.

Dave,

In the process of amassing the parts for the iceflyer. I can source the steel locally, and I have a friend or two that can help out. Will advise here when I get them underway.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the info. I have a set almost made up now from mild steel, no heat treat ...yet.
I'm still working on the best method of sharpening, I'm not holding my breath as to how long they will stay sharp and that means buliding some kind of jig that is easy to use and will maintain the consistant 45 edge.
I'll be checking back to see how you are making out.
It looks like "next year country" for me...!

Read of a guy that took that path. He eventually gave up on trying to keep an edge and became a Sarns fan. I believe they use a hardened steel. My experience with the Sarns chocks, however, is that they are too light duty for the Flyer.

Thanks Rolley, still sifting through the information that I have available from local sources as well. Seems to be a number of ways to approach the situation. With regard to the chocks, seem to find your opinion expressed by a number of folks. Perhaps a heavier duty chock would be a good idea as well. Thanks again.
