The opening game day of the Ontario Sr. Women's Box Lacrosse League was completed on Saturday, May 23rd at the Hagersville Arena. The first day wasn't without it's administrative problems, but it is hoped that the league can grow on the organizational front and turn this into a viable league for woman's box lacrosse.
Game One saw the Whitby Rush defeat the Toronto Stars 9-0. Playing a fast break offfensive style, Whitby built up a quick 5-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Toronto made the adjustments to counteract the fast break, but Whitby's defence was overwhelming and they took advantage of the many forced Star miscues. Credit goes to the Stars goalie who was outstanding despite the score.
Game Two, Whitby hammers Akwesasne 10-2. Relying on the fast break & tough defence, the Rush built up a 9-0 lead into the third before surrending 2 goals late in the game. Akwesasne were relying on a physical game and the skilled Whitby ladies moved into free space and used team speed to their advantage.
Game Three, Stars defeat the Grand River Attack 5-3. Both teams played a back and forth game with the Attack gaining the lead and the Stars battling back to tie the game and take it with a pair of goals in the third. Again the Stars goalie was outstanding and was instrumental in keeping her team in the game early before the Stars scored their first goal.
Game Four, Grand River & Akwesasne tie 5-5. This was an evenly matched see-saw battle with the lead changing hands several times during the game. With having to shorten the third period to get the game in, both teams left it all out on the floor with numerous fast breaks and great goaltending. The game got chippy late in the third with Akwesanse going on the powerplay with 2:20 to play, but could not solve the Grand River D for the winning goal.
Good luck to all teams on the next game day!
