WHAT IS EDGE?

This is the first time Edge Lacrosse has forayed into the women's lacrosse environment. Until this point we have been very successful in the men's market and getting Candian male elite lacrosse players scholarships to NCAA programs in the States. Here is more:

The Edge Lacrosse program was designed to groom elite lacrosse players for the next level of play at Division 1 college programs in the United States and Collegiate Lacrosse in Canada. The Edge Lacrosse program provides Canadian youth lacrosse players with exposure to the American game and the chance to get college scholarships to U.S. universities. Most importantly, it provides them with the opportunity to compete against American teams on American soil at tournaments. Not only does the Edge Lacrosse program produce elite lacrosse talent, it also prepares players for academic success. The EDGE program is targeting 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th grade student athletes. We begin working with athletes at this young age to prepare them for the academic recruiting process. American colleges and universities identify recruits for their programs as early as 9th and 10th grade. Edge recognizes that it is vital to get all players as much early exposure to these coaches as possible. Early identification provides our players with the best opportunity to attend the school of their choice. From the academic perspective the EDGE program requires that all players meet a minimum school grade of 75 %.

Mississauga 1 Girls U-19 Sandbaggers

by LAXMind (Login LAXMind)

The team’s point leader shows as having played in 4 games of league play yet posted statistics on only one day (2 games). Consider that the team’s point leader posted 13 points on that one day against ‘Brampton A’ and ‘Oshawa A’ and no other points during league play. Mississauga finished higher than Brampton in the standings yet Brampton moved on to the A provincials having lost and tied their league games with Mississauga.

To show as having plyed in 4 games, minimum required to be eligible for provincials, the team finishing in the bottom 2 of the A teams making them eligible for playoffs against the top two of the B teams. The coach must have rostered her name with foresight on those games she never played.

The team’s “league play” top point getter plays in only one of three playoff games, posting one goal. The team moves down to B provincials, perhaps where they should be, and yet plays in all four provincial games.

I doubt the teams leading point getter played in more than 2 league games but had to show on score sheets for provincial eligiblity. Don’t get me wrong, had this player honestly been there for team throughout league play, then all the power to them. They would however have competed in the A division and who knows may have contended their too with this one player’s efforts contributing to the team.

Mississauga, without this one player may have been a B contender, but who knows. No question the team’s point leader is an awesome player and clearly carries the team when she can show up. The leading point getter contributed her name and not effort to the results of the team’s league play, yet clearly it was her play that lead Mississauga to B champions. Without her name and part time committment, Mississauga’s B team champions must know their medals are a gift. Gold medal enscription should read “awarded as a result of our part time ringer”. Mississauga’s C team bronze medal enscription should read “Played, competed, won and lost, and as a team, we did it!”

Way to go Mississauga 2, shame on you Mississauga 1

Girls U19 C

by Laxmom (Login rands1992)

What a beautiful day in Orangeville. I would like to commend the hosting association for a well organized and well run tournament. I would also like to say that their U19 #3 team plays with class and a growing and developing skill that they and their coaches and parents should be proud of. Having said that, we were parked beside the fields and didn't leave the park all day, (having played an early and a late game,) and we saw the best and worst. It is a great game to watch when played well, but some of these young ladies on a couple of the teams displayed some of the worst examples of unsportsmanlike behaviour that I've ever seen in lacrosse. If some of those things were done in girls hockey they'd have gotten called and given unsportsmanlike penalties if not penalties for misconduct. Between the running of scores and berating of developing teams by one team to the slashing by another (leaving several of our girls taking leftover ice from coolers for the ride home) it was sad to watch. Keep in mind, ladies, that you are in a development division and should be spending that time learning to play the game better. If you discourage other developing players from playing next year with these antics, whom are you going to play against next year? Keep up the good work ladies see you next game. Congratulations to the teams who were not "playing" that way, you did great and deserve to be praised for your hard work and sportsmanship.

Thanks!

by (Login Zacher)

After a couple of days of sleep, I can look back with much pride for the lacrosse community! The players, volunteers, and media all converged on the DOVE 2008 event in Aurora and demonstrated what can be done when we all work together!

Even friends who don't really understand the game of lacrosse shake their head in disbelief that a 25 hour game, played by 120 players, with 25 goal swings in the score would end up tied at 292 to 292. The last couple of hours were a complete blur after playing 15-17 hours of a 25 hour game with 60+ hours of sleep deprivation. All I do remember is the excitement, energy and buzz on the benches along with Gary Marks jumping up and down with his camera because he realized that he was able to record something truly spectacular!

It took many individuals to make this happen with a outcome which completely surpassed our own expectations! I thank you all! It will take me some time but I'm willing to shake each person's hand for making this campaign a huge success.

As the dust settles DOVE 2008 has generated somewhere around $50,000 for the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness! You still have time to make an online pledge at https://www.ccfaa.com/content.php?fcn=donateonline&src=lacrosse.

Again Thanks!

For those of you who knew Geoff Elmer it is with deepest regrets that I
have to inform you that he passed away Saturday evening at 11:08pm after
his short but courageous battle with cancer.

He was a great friend to lacrosse, especially girls lacrosse, ensuring that all was done to ensure we had players for teams, promote the game, lining fields, convening, coaching, and being the Girls Field Director on the Board of the Minor club.

He will be truly missed.

He leaves behind a wife as well as 4 children

Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

CHARLIE MacSPADYEN

It is with great sadness the MacSpadyen family announces the passing of Charlie MacSpadyen, peacefully at Etobicoke General Hospital, on February 29, 2008, in his 84th year.

Dearly beloved husband of Moira. Dear father of Ron (Sandy), Ian (Carrie) and Sylvia (Paul). He was a loving and devoted grandfather of Chelsea, Tessa, Ryan, Kyle, Courtney, Stephanie and Julie.

His passion for life and his sense of humour were an inspiration to all who knew him. The family would like to extend a warm appreciation to all of the physicians and nurses who cared for him in his life, and in particular those in the Palliative Care Unit, who lovingly comforted him on his final days.

Opportunity for friends and family to share memories of his life will be made available at Newediuk Funeral Home, 2058 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke, for a visitation on Monday, March 3 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m., and a Funeral Service on his 85th birthday, Tuesday, March 4, 2008, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Etobicoke General Hospitial, Palliative Care Unit, and will be administered by Newediuk Funeral Home.

DOVE 2008

by (Login Zacher)

Greetings All,

DOVE 2008 - As mentioned during the OLA meeting, Aurora Masters Lacrosse will organize the world's longest lacrosse game (25 hours) on June 13 at 3:00 pm to raise money for the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness. We need approximately 10 referees, 160 players and 20 volunteers to ensure the event's success!

Although the registration deadline for players is May 16th, I would encourage you to contact your respective members, direct them to our website www.laxdove.ca and register asap. The registration fee is $35 which covers your jersey, a minimum of 4 hours of floor time, a least two meals and non alcoholic beverages along with other surprises.

I will personally throw down a challenge to each participant to collect at least $250 in pledges for this event. If 160 players, 10 referees and 20 volunteers each secured $250 each in pledges we would raise $47,500 from our organization alone!

I have a number of corporate sponsors to approach and with these numbers we should be able to leverage more from the "big boys"!

All the necessary information is online at www.laxdove.ca. If you have any questions please contact me.

Cheers,

Jim
PS. I apologize for the multiple inquires but this event is worthy of ensuring that we do not miss anyone who may want to participate.

Due to an overwhelming response the player roster is only 25 players away from being completely full. Although we may accept additional individuals depending on scheduling and logistics, we can not guarantee your spot after these 25 spots are filled.

Please drop me an email if you're planning to participate in the next couple of days with times you are available. You can imagine the work involved in drafting a schedule which attempts to meet everyone's needs while balancing the player distribution evenly throughout the game.

Cheers,

EDGE MAKES THE MOVE TO WOMEN’S LACROSSE!

by (Login Edgelacrosse)

EDGE MAKES THE MOVE TO WOMEN’S LACROSSE!

Edge is very excited to announce its intentions to create Edge Elite Women’s Lacrosse Teams! These teams will promote female Canadian Lacrosse athletes and afford them the same benefits given to all our Male Edge Elite Athletes. As this will be the inaugural season for the Edge Women’s Team’s we are very much dedicated to working hard in order to put together the best group of female athletes available within Ontario. Teams will be fielded at U14, U16 and U18.

Edge has always recognized that the fundamental cornerstones of an elite lacrosse program is the people who are leading it. We pride ourselves on having a dedicated, invested and truly skilled coaching and managing staff. This is a program characteristic that we are determined to carry on in the Women’s program. Please read through the rest of the information and if it sounds like something you would want to be involved with, please be in touch with the contact listed at the bottom.

****

For those individuals within the women’s lacrosse environment of Ontario who are unfamiliar with Edge here is a short introduction to the structure, philosophy and practices of the Edge program:

EDGE stands for the intangible qualities that separate elite lacrosse players from the rest. Play with Edge and become a part of a winning program that dedicates itself to the preparation and promotion of elite Canadian lacrosse players. Edge teams consist of the top twenty student athletes at each age level from across Southern Ontario. EDGE is looking for student athletes who are serious about attending Preparatory College and or University in the U.S. on scholarship.

WHAT IS EDGE?

To Give You An Idea of Our Success:

EDGE 2007 Highlights – Male Program:

• Thirteen EDGE players named to Team Canada U19
• 16 EDGE Players successfully recruited to the NCAA in 2007 with approximately 30-40 estimated to sign in 2008

· EDGE Juniors and Seniors defeat Division II university team

• EDGE Juniors capture prestigious TriState tournament
• EDGE Senior vs. EDGE Junior Final at ULAX Top 16 Shootout
• EDGE Juniors and Seniors qualify for NDP Tournament of Champions
(USA national high school club championship)

See Edge website www.edgelacrosse.com under EDGE NEWS for full stories.

SCHEDULING

Each EDGE team will be attending a minimum of three top recruiting tournaments during the summer and fall of 2008. The EDGE program will take extreme care to ensure that there is no conflict with your local club team’s schedule, specifically Qualifiers or Provincials. We have carefully planned our schedule so as to avoid any conflicts with the upcoming Ontario field and box schedules. If a conflict should arise we will rearrange our schedule accordingly. Confirmed tournament schedules and details will be provided to those players selected to represent EDGE Lacrosse.

If this program sounds like something you would be interested in be involved with please respond to coach@edgelacrosse.com .

Positions

by (Login coachjen2)

I know this might be controversial. BUT: I find that there are alot of people still using traditional positions. I really hope- being an old ex player, and now a coach, that things head this way:

With the advent of Restraining Lines:

First, I have to give credit where credit is due before I write this relatively long explanation of the positions of girls lacrosse. That being said, I played a long time ago. When I started coaching, I was kind of stuck in a traditional mind set when it came to many things- especially positions. I have a friend, named Bob Mezeul, who might be the greatest coach I have ever worked with, who taught me differently. He gave me the idea to think outside the box when it came to positions. This is what I have com up with.

With the advent of restraining lines, the game of women’s lacrosse is forever changed. I can’t pass judgment as to whether that’s a good change or a bad change, but I can’t control it, so I function within it. In my experience, the old positions no longer apply without causing undue confusion and unnecessary offside’s calls. So, I have re named, and moved positions and jobs around to meet these rule changes.

In addition, I think that younger players, by nature of their brains development, are concrete thinkers. I think that vague positions such as Middy, Low D, Low Attack and High attack leave them with unclear notions of what their jobs are on the field. Therefore, I have mixed some of the old with some of the new so everyone knows who they are and what their job is. This leaves a feeling of cohesiveness and teamwork that increases team play and overall results.

Positions and their Jobs:
This is the system of positions that I use. Each position has a job. This is not to say that other people’s ideas are wrong, only that I feel this works well to prevent “offsides” calls, and work better as a team.

1st Home: Behind the net, back up other people’s shots, roll the cage, feed people from behind, manage the offense- you are in charge when we are working the motion because you can see everything, talk to the second home and make sure she covers behind the net when you roll, or when you move in front of the goal. Stand next to the goal and slightly to the side on draws, and when the ball is down among our defense. Be on the strong side when ball transitions down the field. Always stay on our attack 70% of the field… but mostly in the 30 yards closet to the goal you are shooting ON.

2nd Home: Behind the net when 1st home rolls or cut up in front of the goal, stagger your self from the other homes- especially 1st home. Be at about the restraining line, on the side the ball comes down the field. You will be the second cutter (TO the girl with the ball) as the ball transitions down the field. You may need to roll the cage, or feed from behind. Stay on our attack 70% of the field for sure, and mostly on the attack 50%.

3rd Home: Big Transition person. Watch 4th home, and stagger yourself from her and 2nd home for good coverage. Remember to cut TO the girl coming out of the defense with the ball, NOT AWAY… your defender will be trailing you- staying goal side. If you do not receive a pass, and the ball moves quickly down the field, you must get down toward the goal ASAP for the motion. Stay on our attack 70% of the field.

4th Home: Biggest Transition person. You must be able to anticipate which side the ball is coming down. You are the first pass out of the defense. You must be able to CUT TO our defenders as they bring the ball out to you, catch the ball, pivot and look for the draw and dump, or another attack player cutting to you. Stay on our attack 70% of the field. You are in the circle for draws, next to our left wing.

Center: You are in the middle of almost all of the plays. You are everywhere, and must cover the whole field. You are attack when we are working the motion offense, or a transition, and defense when THEY are trying to score. You must have stamina coming out of your ears, and never give up. Listen for one of your wing to call “Middy back!”, and look for a stick in the air showing someone else is tired and has volunteered. Otherwise, you must be the one to stay back.

Left Wing: You must cover the entire field, primarily on the left side on draws and on clears. Keep intermittent contact with your right wing so you are on the other side of the field from her- wherever that is. Listen for “Middy back!” to avoid off-sides calls when one of our defenders goes down on attack (or attackers go down on defense). Raise your stick in the air if you want to be the middy staying back, and look around so you are sure no one else has done the same! On draws, you are on the circle next to our 4th home!

Right Wing: You must cover the entire field, primarily on the right side on draws and on clears. Keep intermittent contact with your left wing so you are on the other side of the field from her- wherever that is. Listen for “Middy back!” to avoid off-sides calls when one of our defenders goes down on attack (or attackers goes down on defense). Raise your stick in the air if you want to be the middy staying back, and look around so you are sure no one else has done the same! On the draws you are on the circle next to the 4th man!

4th Man: Your job is to anticipate long clears, and which side the ball will be coming down the field. Cover your person, but also be the first to pick up their girl coming down on the fast break! You may go down onto Attack by screaming, “Middy Back!” as you do so! On draws, you are on the circle next to our right wing.

3rd Man: You are a team player at heart. Help out your 4th man with double teams when needed up above the 12. Watch the fast break and pick up. Always protect your 8 meter shooting space. The girls with the ball is the dangerous one! Listen to your goalie for her instructions about clears!

Cover Point: You and the Point need to really communicate on whom slides when. Remember the slide is always to the strong side- or the side the other team’s player is taking it to- leaving a person that needs to be picked up by your middy who just got beat. Scream out: “Someone pick up # 6!” when you slide (or whatever your girl’s number is). Be a team player.

Point: You and the Cover Point need to really communicate on whom slides when. Remember the slide is always to the strong side- or the side the other team’s player is taking it to- leaving a person that needs to be picked up by your middy who just got beat. Scream out: “Someone pick up # 6!” when you slide (or whatever your girl’s number is). You are the last one available to help your goalie. Be a team player.

Cutting to vs. Cutting away:
In transitions down the field I see you guys running with the girl coming down. That’s crazy! Your defender is staying goal side of you! If you move towards her, you are keeping yourself covered! If on the other hand, there is a draw and dump situation, where your girl is moving to pick up the person with the ball, then you should move away from the girl with the ball.
By the way, I see all of our attack standing north of our 50 yard line when the ball is down in our defense. 1st home, be up by the goal, 2nd home, at about the other team’s 30, 3rd home be at about the 50, and 4th home, be closer to OUR restraining line! Stagger, stagger, stagger!
Always move to the empty space!!! Remember that the motion offense needs to be more fluid, and your picks better placed! ON the defender, that’s who you are picking!

Rick "Tuggy" Passfield Tournament - recap, thoughts, etc.

Rick "Tuggy" Passfield Tournament

By Andrew "A.P." McKay
Sunday, August 26, 2007

A couple of people asked me to write a little something on the Tuggy tournament this weekend. I didn’t think a scores and games recap was really appropriate, so instead, here’s a jumble of thoughts I put together when I got home Sunday night.

************

It was somewhat fitting that my drive home from the inaugural Tuggy tournament took me along the Highway of Heroes, with thousands of people standing on overpasses through Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax, waiting to pay tribute to Canada’s latest fallen soldiers. They smiled and waved, firefighters stood atop their trucks, sirens flashed along the highway, for miles. After this weekend, I think I understand.

The first annual Rick “Tuggy” Passfield Memorial Field Lacrosse Tournament for U-16s went off this weekend without a hitch. That doesn’t however, mean nothing went wrong; the first barbecue didn’t work, the ridiculous weather on Saturday forced the shutdown of two fields, the P.A. guy who seemed incapable of actually pronouncing a name correctly, one untrained timekeeper* either let guys out of penalties too early or made them stay too late, etc.

But really, none of that mattered. I don’t mean in a “big picture” kind of way, either. Anything that went wrong was quickly shaken off, and I’m not being melodramatic when I say there was a spirit of “get ‘er done” throughout the event that you normally don’t see…well, anywhere. When the fields were closed, everyone buckled down, moved to the last available field, and just played longer. When the barbecue didn’t work, they got another one. When the timekeeper screwed up, teams laughed it off. When the P.A. guy mangled names, we laughed at that too.

The tournament itself had its share of highlights – Oshawa 1’s last second (literally – the Blue Knights scored with 1 second left) win over Halton Hills in the A semifinal stands out the most for me – but the bigger impact was the stature the event gained in a short period of time. The tournament program tells a fair chunk of that story: letters of recognition from the Ontario premier, the Prime Minister of Canada, the Mayor of Oshawa, the Durham Regional Chair, the Oshawa Hospital Foundation, and the president of the OLA, as well as a formal recognition of Saturday, August 25th as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Awareness Day in memory of Tuggy, by the City of Oshawa. The tournament raised over $10,000 for the Oshawa Hospital Foundation that will go towards purchasing an echocardiogram machine that will help diagnose conditions like HCM.

I can’t imagine the amount of work Joel Johnson, Linda Hurren, and everyone else had to put in long beforehand to get this thing off the ground, but they really did do a great job, and I was glad that Joel got a chance to get back from Owen Sound in time to see the final day and experience it all. It was equally impressive to see Team Alberta and a team from Pennsylvania come up to participate, not to mention the Iroquois and Akwesasne teams, to go along with Halton Hills and the strong Durham representation. As the clock ticked down on the final game, one of the officials noted that it was somewhat fitting that the inaugural winners of the A and B championships were Oshawa 1 and Oshawa 2, respectively – the same program Tuggy played for starting at age 10.

I think the officials summed up everything that was great about the event. They donated their time (which was estimated to be almost $3000 in fees normally), but it wasn’t a hodge-podge crew. Some well-known names, including Jim Price, Jon Watson and Bill Fox, joined an incredible crew of probably the most professional officials I’ve ever come across. More importantly, they treated the tournament with respect and helped give it the feel of a high-level tournament. I really can’t say enough about what an absolute pleasure it was to watch those guys work these games.

After the medals and trophies had been handed out, one moment stood fresh in the minds of many at the event. It happened late in the ‘B’ final. Jordan Passfield, Tuggy’s little brother, was sent on by his teammates with a short stick, after playing pole all weekend. Alas, the ball went the other way. So Jordan chased it down, came up with the ground ball, and took off up the field. Met just past midfield by a couple of Clarington defenders, Jordan tried to charge through, then jumped a bit, and flopped over them, into a full-out barrel roll – and held on to the ball. He got up, ran again, passed it off, and got an assist on Oshawa’s last goal. But what made it better, at least for me, was that Sheila Passfield, Jordan and Tuggy’s mother, was standing right on the sidelines, ready to hand out the medals. Anyone who knows Sheila would have loved the look on her face, watching her son run around with reckless abandon, pulling off the one play that got everybody off their feet and talking about it hours later.

I wanted to end with a little bit about Sheila. I haven’t seen Sheila smile this much in a long time, watching all of these teams play, watching a fantastic tournament named after her son, and really being a part of a lacrosse community that cares so much about her and her family. I think, this weekend, she was proud of everything Tuggy was able to do. So many of the people he played with came out to play again, or coach, or help out, or watch. So many others chipped in with donations, auction items, etc. And in the end, it was because of Tuggy that the tournament raised enough money to meet its goal, and take a step in helping Durham-area youths avoid the same tragedy that befell Tuggy.

For the people who lined Highway 401 on Sunday night, the significance lied not in their intent, but in their willingness to make an active statement. That was the same feeling I got all weekend in Oshawa: that regardless of their reasons, their relationships with Tuggy or the sport in general, all these people – players, coaches, sponsors, officials, volunteers, parents, fans – took a step above “remembering”, and stepped up to do something small to help out. It’s been said that small actions yield great results, and I think probably everyone who participated in the tournament feels like their participation, however small, helped Tuggy do something great yet again.

"If that’s the lasting legacy of this tournament, you couldn’t ask for much more."

From Ron Pallister: God bless you Tuggy, Jordan, Sheila, Andrew, all their relatives and friends, the officials, volunteers and players who participated in this great event - the first of many I trust.

Nicely done Andrew
by Ron Messer

Thanks Andrew that was a great piece. It was a lot of fun. As I said in my bit at the dinner Saturday night, the lacrosse family is unique, I examined my list of friends and acquaintences, they almost all come from the "family". My buddy Linda did all that work from her heart, as did all the volunteers, she never stopped all weekend. As this tourney hopefully grows over the years, it could well become the highlight of the Field lacrosse season.

Wonderful Post!!!!!!
by Ron Pallister

Andrew, this post touched my heart.
The feeling you have now is similar to how I feel when donations are made to the CBCF in my wife Brenda's memory.
It's this kind of support that is generated by "the greatest people on Earth", the lacrosse "family" that makes all the work more than worth while.
Thank you/Nya Weh to the lacrosse community/family.
Ron

With Thanks
by Sheila Passfield

Andrew:

Thank you for the wonderful "recap" ... Your words captured our weekend beautifully.

I cannot fully express my gratitude to the amazing group of people that made the idea of a Charity Tournament become a reality - it appears we may have reached our fundraising goal and more importantly, we have had an opportunity to share information about HCM ...

The planning for next year will be underway soon --- I hope to see everyone again ... A heartfelt THANK YOU to EVERYONE that attended, participated, volunteered ( I could go on and on and on ....) --- it means so much to know that Rick is still remembered and that those that did not know him get a chance to know of him ... He was part of an incredible lacrosse community of brothers ... no matter what color the jersey !! Your kind support proved the strength of that brotherhood over the weekend.

thank you
by akwesasnefan

Thank you so much for all your hospitality, letting others into your family's hearts, it was such a great weekend, it makes a person sit back and say wow, this person that none of us (from Akwesasne) knew must have been someone really caring and giving to have such great people looking out for him and never forgetting someone that can still help put smiles on peoples faces.

Even with the rain, imagine the skill levels of those kids enjoying the greatest game on earth, the love of the game of those boys and the love of knowing they too are now part of something special.

You can bet one thing "TUGGY" your new found friends in Akwesasne will be back next year and for many to come as you and your family plus the numerous friends that helped make this weekend a special part of our lacrosse lives.

Thank you or the memories and great lacrosse weekend, that is what lacrosse is all about.

U 19 Worlds in Peterborough

by Worldcupper (Login laxxxin)

Great start for Canada last night in Peterborough. Huge crowd and Canada beats Australia 11 - 8.
I think it was the first win ever for a Canadian women's team over Australia at either U 19 or Senior.
Tougher game today in front of another large crowd as Canada fell 17 - 7 to a very strong US team. Canada held their own in the first half but the US took it to them in the second.
Canada versus England at 1:30 on Tuesday in Peterborough.
Check out the game; all players are from Ontario and lots of locals from Whitby and Orangeville.
Hey, its fun to watch!

looking for players

by dianelabelle (Login dianelabelle)

We are also looking for players. We do not have a winter league, but if enough women want to play throughout the winter, we will seek out an arena close by and rent it regularly to practice and play with other women. At present, we have 14 runners and 2 goalies. Always looking for more who want to play regularly.
