Getting organized

by laxadaisy (Login laxadaisy)

Some of the members of the varsity field squad -- U of T -- have expressed interest in having a women's box league in the GTA. I believe someone may have been approached to be a convenor.

Right now there's a great women's league in Durham -- with eight teams -- (where I play) but it's so far to travel.

The trick would be getting a facility without ice in the GTA in the winter. I think the Scarborough soccer centre is a possibility. The cost? Per player it would likely be about $150 a season.

And that's all I know.

A walk down memory lane....

by Retired Mohawk (Login missymohawks)

Is there anyone on this forum from the days of girls (women's) box lacrosse from the 70's and 80's? When I played Jr. (early - mid 80's) there were teams from Mississauga (actually we had 2 - Missy Mohawks, and Missy Indians,) Hamilton (Chet Couture who refs in the NLL was their head coach,) Elora / Fergus, Owen Sound (always a great rivalry and OS Nancy Lemon was an incredible player,) Orillia, Whitby, Beaches. Okay enough nostalgia!
I would love to play again (only non-contact this time around - I'm too old to sport bruises...) Are there any leagues running relatively close to Mississauga? I know that the Masters league in Brampton has one or two women playing there, is there anywhere else?

The WBLA playoffs are Friday Sept 10th and Saturday Sept 11th @ the Iroquois Arena.

That is also the Six Nations Fall Fair weekend. So, in between games people can check out the motorcycles that are going to be displayed in the Gaylord Powless Arena and all that other good stuff.

HELP ME!!

Allright, hi guys!! My name is Anne, and this would have been my 6th year on the field - unfortunate keyword is "would." I live in Texas and played for York last year in my first year at university. Our school decided to show our team the door over the summer, and after 3 months of fighting, the answer for "why" in the end boiled down to the school not getting enough of an ego boost from the program. Yeah, don't get me started. So now i have no team to play on, i cant even find a place to practice with people.

ANYWAYS!! I wanted to test the waters and see how many gals would be interested in starting a fall pick up league. summer teams are all OVER the place, but once school starts there are zero options for people without a team. "Down south" over the summer we have a field set up and whoever wants to play can come and play twice a week, and I wanted to start something in Toronto for all those in the same situation/ people at say a community college that have no team/ and girls that have graduated university but still have the itch to play. I hate to think that there aren't 25 girls in the city who want to pick up a stick and play once or hopefully twice a week. any experience, any age. hah we even had male coaches playing with us (girls sticks of course) so dont think we are leaving you out!

The only issues are that I don't know where we could play... I'm very unfamiliar with Toronto, but I was thinking that, especially if we would have graduated people coming, it could run from about 630 to 8, which would be after highschool practices had ended. So, if there is a highschool coach that would be willing to let us use their goals (and play with us surely!) that would be perfect.

so ... if ANYONE is interested in coming out once or twice a week to play, shoot me an email at anneped@yorku.ca or just reply to the post. This would be an AMAZING thing to start up. It gives graduated girls something to look forward to after leaving school (because if they are anything like me, 3 days without lacrosse triggers severe withdrawl) and gives players who maybe played in highschool but dont want to spend everyday playing a chance to still get out and play. AND, if you arent interested, but know someone who is, or are a coach and have old players that you know would be interested, PLEASE send me an email - I really want this to happen.

Any suggestions would be fantastic, and thanks so much for takin the time to read this!
-Anne

Nova Scotia Update!!! Good news

by (Login dawgbone98)

Once again, I apologize to anyone this has been sent to in error, my address
book is a mess...

I have some very good news concerning the planned trip to Nova Scotia. My
initial cost estimations were a little high, and we will now be flying as
opposed to taking a bus.

The cost will now be a full $100 cheaper. The price is now $250 which
includes all costs except for what you personally will eat or drink.

We will be flying in to Halifax (from Pearson), and ST. Francis Xavier will
be providing travel from Halifax to Antigonish. We will be flying in Friday
night, and flying back Sunday evening. Times have not yet been confirmed,
but space and availability has.

We will no longer be playing Friday night, and our games will be on Saturday
and Sunday. With that, I will be adding an addition 3 spots for runners,
taking our total to 18 runners and 2 goaltenders.

As of right now, we have our 2 goaltenders as well as 11 runners, and lot's
more inquiries and interest, so spots are filling quickly. I've had several
goaltenders email me, and there is already a waiting list for goaltenders.
That being said, if you want to play out and can handle full contact, you
are more than welcome to tag along, and that will bump you to the top of the
list in case one of the goaltenders pulls out. Any girls interested in
playing, we will make alternative accomodations for you (possibly at an
extra cost, but I'm working on it), and remember it is full contact. We
also have jersies, shorts, water bottles and all that already, so we are
prepared for that.

Cost for additional passengers (people who aren't playing) is $250, as the
price includes your flight and a shared room. Please let me know ASAP if
you do not want to be in a 4 person room (cost will be extra, and space is
limited). Deadline for all players and passenger requests is August 20th,
2004, with money coming in as soon as possible.

Money will be needed sooner, because the flight must be paid for in full (I
cannot make a deposit). The sooner I get the money, the better it is,
because it will ensure us that we will all get on the same flight (the other
option is taking a couple of different flights, which would see some players
waiting at the airport for several hours). The sooner the money is in, the
better.

You can give your cheque, money or money order to one of 2 people. Please
make all cheques and money orders payable to Derek Blasutti.

You can leave a message for either of us and we will get back to you ASAP.
The sooner we get money in, the easier it is, and everything else. The $250
includes the Hotel, which doesn't need to be paid until we get there, and
that cost is roughly $25/person, so $225 is what I would need for your
flight, and the remaining $25 can come later.

St. Francis Xavier Lacrosse Invitational

by (Login dawgbone98)

A friend of mine at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish Nova Scotia has planned an invitational Lacrosse Tournament for September 17th-19th 2004.

He's had a team recently pull out, so I would see what I could do.

This will be a full contact tournament, using CLA Box Lacrosse rules. Lacrosse in Nova Scotia is a growing sport, and I think this would be an excellent opportunity to help not just the community of Antigonish, but the whole province of Nova Scotia.

This is going to be a rather large event, as it will be covered on Eastlink (local television), and will be during St. Francis Xavier's Frosh week.

Games will be 20 minutes in length stop time, with a 7 minute rest between periods. If we go, we will be guaranteed 4 games, plus there will be a skills competition on the Saturday.

This is a great way to promote the game of lacrose at the Senior Men's level in a province that is ready to embrace this great game.

Now that the preamble is out of the way, here is the gist of what I am looking for:

Players must be 18 years of age or older (19 is preferred, but it's a minor point).

I am going to need 14 additional runners (outside of myself) as well 2 goaltenders. This should provide lots of floor time for everyone, especially considering the length of the games. These spots will come on a first come first serve basis (contact info below). We are looking for a mix of experienced and new players, because this is about the growth of the game of Lacrosse everywhere.

We will be chartering a Bus from a location in Southern Ontario (for now let's label it as Brampton), with possible pickup destinations along the Trans-Canada highway (401) for those along the way (though I would like to keep those to a minimum if possible).

Cost per player is approximately $350 for the trip, and that includes the bus Charter and the Hotel room.

Cost per passenger will be approximately $150, and that includes the Bus Charter and the Hotel room. We will have room for roughly 24 passengers, who will get a chance to get a weekend away, and help promote the game of Lacrosse. Wives and girlfriends are welcome to be a part of this, and will have first right of refusal. But with it being Frosh week at St FX, there are going to be quite a few friendly gatherings throughout Antigonish and it should be a great time, so you may want to bring a few buddies along to enjoy the nightlife.

Bus will likely leave around Thursday Sept 16th at about 6:00am, and the drive will be about 35 hours. We will be leaving shortly after the championship game on Sunday Afternoon, and most likely get in early Tuesday Morning/Late Monday Night.

Like I mentioned, Ideally we want to get 16 players at $350/player as well as 24 guests at $150/guest. That will cover the cost of travel and lodging, meaning you are only responsible for what you eat and drink.

Also, if anyone is interested in sponsoring us, or donating money, that would be fantastic as well. Any sponsorships will be recognized by the ST. Francis Xavier lacroose club on their website (http://www.xcelsiorslacrosse.com/main.php).

Now for the bad news. In order to get a charter, I need responses by people no later than August 15th. If you are interested, please let me know as soon as possible. I will also need money as soon as possible, most likely the 20th of August, as I need to pay up front for the bus charter.

You can contact me through

email: d.blasutti@sympatico.ca
phone: 905.458.8398
cell: 416.845.8398
snail: Derek Blasutti, 23 Ascot Ave, Brampton, Ont l6t2p3

All money sent will be fully refunded if the trip falls through, and if there isn't sufficient interest by the 15th, I will post informing everyone.

I know this is short notice, but I got this information last night, and spent the last 24 hours trying to get pricing and that done.

This is a fantastic opportunity to have a great time, play some lacrosse, and help the greatest sport in the world grow.

sure... one thing though.

by (Login dawgbone98)

It will be full contact, against mostly guys.

No problem with any women interested in playing, but I figured I would get that out of the way first.

I now have 2 goaltenders though (I know there are a couple pretty decent Women lax tenders around).

But by all means, if you feel like you can handle contact, girls are more than welcome, just let me know. The only problem I will have is accomodations, you may end up staying in the St Francis Xavier dormitory (unless you want to share a room with 3 guys, or there is interest from a couple of girls).

Also, I may have something that will be reducing the costs, but that info will come in a day or so when things get confirmed.

Thanks,

Derek Blasutti

Six Nations Wildcats VS KW Thunderbirds

by Anonymous (Login number_24)

Saturday, July 3rd's game was Wildcats 12 and Thunderbirds 1. The 12th goal was scored just as the final buzzer went to end the game.

The Tunderbirds did rather well for only having 11 players (including the goalie). And half of them have never played before.

The Thunderbirds play the Wildcats again Saturday July 10th 7pm @ Queensmount Arena, Kitchener.

I also believe the Outlaws play Oneida on Sunday July 11th. I don't know where or what time.

Aurora Masters Lacrosse League 2005

by (Login Zacher)

Greetings,

I've recently moved in to Aurora which is just north of Toronto (20 minutes). Currently, I am running a weekly two hour pickup night of masters rules lacrosse with a group of 30-40 players this summer.

I am quite interested to see if anyone would like to participate in a masters house league next summer. It would probably be on Monday nights with start times at 8:00 and 9:00 pm. This league would start in April and run until late August (17-18 weeks). Approximate cost is around $160. The fee includes your jersey, OLA insurance and many opportunities to win prizes throughout the season (sticks, hats, equipment bags, etc).

Participants must be 21 years or older. Since the league is non-contact, it provides an opportunity for individuals of various skill levels and gender to participate.

If you're interested please drop me an email zacher@cvr.yorku.ca. Depending on the numbers, I would like to run a four or six team league next year.

Thanks,

Jim

PS. For more information concerning the Aurora Masters Pickup Night please refer to http://hpl.cvr.yorku.ca/acc/

I was planning on getting some girls together and practicing this summer, maybe even set up some exhibition games with the other teams. I've also heard talk of a tournament, so maybe even sign up for that. I'm in the Brantford/Hamilton area. So, if your over 18 (or going to be 18 this time next year) and are interested in playing email me at: Phantom_2400@hotmail.com

Sign up next weekend for girls field lacrosse

by Glen Dundas (Login glendundas)

Read in the Brampton Guardian

Sign up next weekend for girls field lacrosse

Registration is scheduled for Sunday March 28 at Brampton Centennial Secondary School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Brampton Girls Field Lacrosse under-15 house league program.

Girls aged 10 to 15 are invited to join the program. The under-19 rep team will practice from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the school so players can watch and register after if they wish.

The girls program with the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association (BMLA) is entering its seventh season and it's the third year for the house league program which runs out of the OPP Fields on McLaughlin Rd., near Queen St.

The girls program is starting to show success. In the 2003 season, 10 Brampton graduates participated with Ontario University Athletics (OUA) teams. Jenny Held, of Queen's was the leading scorer in the OUA and MVP. She coaches in the under-15 program.

Held and three others were named to the OUA all-star team, Heidi Krasnozon of Brock, Pam Fairbridge of York and Melissa Kandola of Western. They are also involved with the house league program.

Members of the OUA champion Wilfrid Laurier team included Jenna Gavaris, Amanda Marshall and Kristin Moores.

Gena McPherson and Bryanne Gilkinson were members of Team Canada which won a bronze medal at the world under-19 championship. Gilkinson is now playing lacrosse at Stanford University, the first West Coast team to be ranked in the top 20 in Division I women's lacrosse. There are more than 200 US universities with women's lacrosse program and one of the goals of the program is to have more graduates playing there.

The under-15 house league program begins in May. League rules are designed to encourage fun and participation for all players. The game is also much different than the box version as it non-contact and played on a field with larger nets.

For information on the league contact Paul Gilkinson at 905-277-0032.

Toronto Summer Lacrosse

by (Login nikki_laxfan09)

Hi, I have been searching for a league that I can play in recreationally. Unfortunatly I am 20 years old and have never played lacrosse before (although I do know a lot about it as I have been around it for 13 years- my brother plays)I have always wanted to play lacrosse but felt I was too old to join. This summer I am looking for a place where I can have fun, and keep in shape for the hockey season. I was wondering if in some way I might be a consideration to your 21 and older rule as I am turning 21 in Sept. Please feel free to email me regarding this issue. Thank you,
Nicole O'Donnell

WBLA

by number_24 (Login number_24)

The Women's Box Lacrosse Association is for women 18 years and up. This past season was it's very first. It had three teams: Six Nations' Wildcats, Oneida Thunder and Six Nations' Outlaws. New teams are welcome to join. I am unsure of registration fees, how far the teams are willing to travel, ext. Their website (www.wbla.net) has an address, phone number and fax number to contact them at. Other than that the site doesn't tell you anything, yet. I can try to answer any questions you might have....

girls box lacrosse- ONTARIO

by lax box (Login owha)

Interesting that Bc has had a league for 4 years!! Burlington and six Nations are making a move towards box. As with any new teams organizers must gauge the interest, so i suggest if you wish to reserve a spot for the 2003 season anywhere in Ontario, email www.craigwindley@hotmail.com and he will forward to female supporters throughout Ontario. He is presently the kw girls field coach but he has agreed to communicate and co-ordinate- give your name, address, age, email and phone number. we'll see where it goes!!

3-on-3 Oldtime Field Lacrosse tournament (Open to 16 Year-old and up)

by laxrepo (Login laxrepo)

Six Nations Minor Lacrosse Association and the new Iroquois Lacrosse Centre are hosting a 3-on-3 field lacrosse tournament this weekend (August 23rd and 24th) at Chiefswood Park on Old Hwy 54.
The tournament starts around 9 AM, so get there early and register your team.
The prize money has yet to be determined as it depends on how many teams actually are entered.
Entry fee is $ 100 for 3 players and 1 alternate. (Open to anyone 16 years-old and over, Women too)
Not just an all-native tournament.
The tournament games are divided into 7-minute halfs.
Each game should take only 15 minutes to complete.
The alternate can only play if there is an injury.
Helmets and Gloves are mandatory along with lacrosse sticks.
There are no goal-nets, only a post that are set 40 yards apart enclosed in a 9-foot diameter crease.
No offensive player is allowed in the crease.
There is a 24-second shot clock, if the offense team has not attempted a shot during this time the ball is turned over to the opposition.
To start the game, the ball is placed at the centre and the players are in behind the goal-posts.
When the whistle is blown, the players must race to retrieve the ball.
So, if you haven't had your fill of lacrosse and want to try and play lacrosse the old-fashion way that it was played for centuries come out to Chiefswood Park and try your luck.

If you left some addresses of how to get ahold of them, that would help. Perhaps they could enter into the upcoming 7 v 7 tournament as an intro to our league to get their girls used to the game.

Hope to see lots of people out to play in that tournament.. Should be tonnes of fun!!

PS anyone interested in playing in the tournament that does not yet have a team, can email me at lax_goddess@hotmail.com

The tournament is set up in two divisions

U-15 which is 1989 +
and
U-20 which is 1984 +

They'd be competing with people slightly older (assuming they'd enter the U-20 division if they want everyone to play together), but other teams will be in similar circumstances I'm sure

for more information on the tournament check out www.minornorthmen.com

I WANNA PLAY!!!!!!!

by (Login orangecrusher99)

Would someone please respond and let me know where I can play Box Lacrosse, I'm 29 years old with alot of experience. I know that it's probably way too late but if there is a chance to sign on a team at the end of this season that would be FANTASTIC!
I will wait until next year if I have too.
I am a goalie but I will play out if needed.

I do live in the Niagara Region but I will travel a little way to play.

I know that there is a girls box team in Burlington, so you could check that out. I have no clue about what the age groups are though.

Hope that helps!
