Rules Corner #2September 24 2009 at 3:54 PM No score for this post | Ref Eric (Login RefEric) from IP address 74.70.103.108 |
| Before I get into the rules, please do me a favor and lay off the refs being at your field 2 times. Frank's post was to inform you of us moving guys around. Excluding emergencies and last minutes adjustments, you should not see an official more than twice. However, sometimes things are unavoidable and I have to move people around. Any and all official complaints go through Frank, who will in turn, contact me. Believe me, these guys try to do the best job possible. There is only two of them out there to cover everything on the field....give 'em a break.
Formations
Only the last man on the line on each side of the ball is eligible to go downfield for a pass. Therefore, if you are a TE on the line and you look at the WR on your side and he is also on the line, you cannot go downfield for a pass. If you are a WR on the line and you look at the TE on your side and he is on the line, you just "covered" him up and he cannot go downfield. This is only a foul if there is a pass that crosses the NZ.
Ex
WR--------TE-T-C-T------WR
TE is covered
WR-----------T-C-T-------WR
----------TE
Legal
-----------TE-T-C-T--------WR
WR
Legal
The best thing you can do to keep it legal, is to only have ONE man on the line on each side of the ball.
Any questions, post up. You can also post other questions that I will try to explain. Judgement calls will not be discussed, only the actual rules.

How about just checking with the line judge.... I don't even know why you took the energy to post that rule explanation; if they don't know/understand this rule they shouldn't touch a football... What's next - explanation of false start and offsides... |

The TE can stay in and block... actually, you could have everyone except the QB on the line, as long as only the last guys on the line go downfield for a pass (everyone else stays in to block).
Also, if it's a running play, it doesn't matter if the TE is covered.
*** Remember, if you are off the line, be at least a yard off the line. Show some separation from the LOS. Technically, you have to be completely behind the waist of the center to be considered off the line. Our fields are not lined at every yard, so we give you some leeway, but make sure there is separation.

Craig, you'd be suprized how many penalties we have for this, even in the A's.... |

Anyone on my team better make it two yards off the line. If you have to be completely behind my waist, better stand behind the QB!
Had to make that joke!
Thanks for the rule post Eric, some of us need reminders and explanations at times!
