We lived in a house built in the late 1800's for a few months in Rural Retreate, VA back in '76 when I was around 12yrs old. The house sat in the middle of 247 acres so the nearest neighbor was a few miles away.
We had many strange, unexplainable things occur while we lived there. Radio's would come on by themselves. We would hear faint organ music coming from the vacant 3rd floor. We could lock all of the doors in the house, only to come back an hour later and find them all unlocked, whether we were home at the time or away. A loaf of bread stood up on end one day, untwisted and opened up right before our eyes. (Yeah, it freaked us all out!!)
One night when we returned home after venturing into the "big city" to go to Piggly Wiggly, my father was leading the pack to unlock the door. The second he stuck the keys in the door, all of us (Mom, Dad, and my 3 siblings) heard the most blood curdling scream come from inside. I think he ran over the top of us to get back into the car first.

After his heart returned to normal, he went in to check the house out, only to find nothing.
There were cattle crossings and gates that had to be opened and closed every time we would leave or return to the property. One night, after leaving and latching the gates behind us, Mom remembered that she had forgotten something at the house, so we went back, not even 3 minutes later. You got it, the gates were down.
Now, about my ghost. I stayed home one afternoon when my parents and siblings left for about an hour. I was doing the laundry (as all good daughters do). I rounded the bottom of the stair case with my arms full of folded clothes when I glanced up and saw a "lady in red" standing on the stair landing above. I couldn't make out her face, but she was wearing a long red gown. She only appeared for a few seconds. Needless to say, the laundry didn't get put away that afternoon.
There were numerous other things that happened there as well, but I've bored you long enough. I will tell you that we did research on the house and found out that several slaves were supposed to have been killed on the 3rd floor, and also right outside the house in one of the hog pens. =O
