I don't know anything from the 70's or 80's that sounds exactly like you describe.
Jethro Tull's late 70's albums have sort of a heavy(ish)-medieval-prog sound. So maybe give them a listen. Heavy Horses and Songs From the Wood are both good examples of that style.
