Perhaps one reason why in some artistic professions its possible to keep on going at the forefront even at an advanced age is that the final product is more collaborative. Clint Eastwood directs (or even acts in Gran Torino), but someone else writes the story, is the cinamatographer etc.

The concept of 'Rock' has the idea that a young person (or group) with little or no training can produce a revolutionary new sound, writing their own poetic lyrics and album after album of new melodies. It obviously impossible to keep on doing it at a consistent level.

Frank Sinatra stayed at the top for years, using other peoples songs and backing arrangements.
