Response to Re: Yesterday
I guess I agree with the other guy in this thread: this kind of silly lightweight pop is not one of my favorite genres, so I'm not going to rate many albums in the genre very highly. Notice that on my old site, I did assign Band on the Run a higher grade that's more in line with what most critics and fans rate it. Perhaps because BOTR feels more "substantial", but mostly because I just like the songs better. Which in pop music, is all it eventually comes down to - individual songs. I just don't find most of the songs on Ram all that charming.
And you do know that John infamously detested Ram (and loved Band on the Run), right? Just a little Beatles trivia for ya. I think a good book could've been made interviewing Beatles on their CANDId opinions of each other's songs and solo albums, but sadly, 'twill never be done. Besides, getting back to the diplomacy issue, John was the only one whose opinions were rude and blunt enough to be interesting. If you interviewed Paul today about John's solo career, he'd probably be excessively diplomatic and give it all a thumbs up.
