Baroque Pop is another interesting subgenre of pop which probably should find its way on the CD. I have nothing of The Left Banke so I should get something of them.
Velvet Underground / Rolling Stones: You have to keep in mind that the CD is addressed to a kid who probably has never heard of these bands before (more or less). I don't want him to think that VU are a pop band because I've given him a "pop" CD with VU on it.
I agree with you that Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks are not that similar, but they might be in the context of such a CD where you want (due to a length restriction) rather different examples of different sub-genres of pop. But still I'm thinking about putting more than one of them on the final CD.
I also like the Ben Folds Five but as you said they might not be such a good example of pop.
