First morning thought here, but I don't know how clean the fuel is but if there's anything in there it would go to the bottom for sure and right into the valve. Lots of fuel in the tank currently? Would be a nice time for a fast flush of the tank If not, mabey there's a way to move the outlet up hill a bit so the crud can flow away from the fitting.
For gravity feed, I can't see where the pump is providing anything for you so wtf, send it on it's way. Just make sure you have a good nozzel and hang it up higher than the level of the fuel if at all possible.
