One other possibility, although I never experienced this, is I recall my GL had a clutch switch/neutral switch. The bike only started if it was in neutral, or if the clutch was engaged. Keep that one in mind, although I don't know off hand how to check that. I do know if you run the jumper direct from the battery to the plus terminal of the starter, you have bypassed both the solenoid and the clutch/neutral switches.
