I eluded in my post about the ride last Sunday to Thanks to Mac. I rode without electrics for years, down and fleece were my friend. I did 2 1500 in 24 hour rides, where the temp never got above 51F, but got below 39 F, with down, and fleece.
Mac and I discussed this several times, he willed me his Darien and Gerbing electric jacket. It was still a few years before I got around to wiring and using.
Now I can agree with the rest,Electrics make a lot of sense. Like others have said, get a jacket, and try it, you may not need the pants socks etc. I sure don't. I stay plenty warm as long as my core keeps warm, last Sunday's 540 mile ride was proof for me, I do wear 2000 gram thinsualte boots, smartwool socks, and keep quite comfortable with long johns, non insulated Joe Rocket pants.
I remember an incident several years back where a rider ran her battery completely down to noting while riding with pants, etc. So monitoring is a good idea.
Mine plugs into the same connector I use for a battery tender, and has a thermostat which is nice. Old Goldwings are not known for their charge system capacity.
