Amazing how seemingly small bits of news can run like wildfire these days.
I was visiting with a farmer, who custom feeds beef, recently, he had just made a huge (and risky)land purchase based on farm commodity and beef prices. He said "what could go wrong, the world is hungry for our products"
I said two words "mad Cow"
Since then we have had Pink Slime, and Mad Cow in the media, neither a real credible threat to society, but... you know the rest of the story all too well.
Like you said Shooter, the public goes ape shit, over some misinformation, and it goes global in seconds.
Good news cannot get past the county line, if even, but what the media perceives as bad news goes viral, worldwide in seconds.
Again, sorry to hear this, fortunately here in the Midwest there are more job opportunities than most, but you still have go through the process of new job, lose some benefits, rebuild your retirement etc etc.
Best of luck to both of you, good people are needed everywhere, but still the stress of this could have been avoided by sorting out the facts before going to mainstream media.
I am not sure where you work, but I do know corporate decisions are made with very little regard to the people who do the work, it is shareholders and bottom line that drives these decisions, and be sure CEO's and top management protect their income at the expense of the hard working people below them.
Again I wish the best of luck, and new door will open for you, even better than the past.
